Thanks Tom!  That's great info.  I didn't realize the hood numbers included a date code.  I was so excited to have found that photo.  I have a MB in pieces in the basement that I was not sure what to do with.  Now I'm toying with the idea of making it look like Dad's and putting that number on it.  I wouldn't be correct but it would mean something to me.  Any idea what the number by the rear wheel well would represent?

So true to form, with only 10 days before an event I decide to tear the Jeep apart.  I had been looking forward to the Ohio Fall Colors Tour all year but being my first time there I didn't know quite what to expect.  I was secretly hoping we would have some rocks or tougher trails that would make a locker come in handy.  I had already purchased the Lock Right 2415-LR locker and done lots of research, but would I have enough time if I ran into problems?  I took a deep breath and started in.

I got Grasshopper up on jack stands, drained the gear oil, and pulled the cover. Things didn't look too bad - no metal shavings in the bottom.  So far so good.

Next I had to pull the axles out a couple inches to pull the splines out of the carrier.  I didn't bother to pull the hubs - just removed the bolts from the disk brake plates and bearing retainers.  That way I didn't have to remember the placement of all the spacers.  The drivers side pulled right out nicely.

The passenger side not so much.  First problem!  I started off tapping the back side of the hub with a small hammer.  Then I went to a 3 lb hammer - wouldn't budge.  I was starting to get worried that I would damage the hub so I found an old brake drum left from the disk brake conversion and bolted it on backwards.  I wailed on it in as much room as I had to swing to no avail.  Finally I broke out the 16 lb BFH.  I thought I was going to knock the Jeep off the jack stands but the bearing finally relented.  Then I was worried that I might have damaged the bearing but I figured I'd just wait and see and possibly replace it after the OFCT.

Next I took pictures and noted the position of the diff. bearing caps.  It's critical that they go back on in the same exact positions. After removing the caps and with the help of a pinch bar the carrier wiggled out.

Next was to mark the position of the ring gear on the carrier. I made some dimples that lined up with numbers marked on the ring gear.

One thing I found was that every ring gear bolt was loose.  In doing some research I found that is common.  Search Metalshapers u-tube videos - he has a fix but I didn't have time to do that mod.
What I did run in to is that someone had way over tightened one of the bolts to the point of nearly breaking it off.  Second problem!  I had an awful time but finally got it out in one piece.  Then I chased the threads in the ring gear with a correct sized tap.  They cleaned out OK.

Those are special bolts (oversized heads) not easily found at the hardware store, so out to the parts jeep fleet I went to steal one.

Next I had to disassemble the spider gears and shaft from the carrier starting with driving out the pin.  I had to find a long enough punch to push it out.

Finally everything is apart.  Old parts at the top, new parts to the right.  Note that the 2 spider gear thrust washers and the thrust block (next to the old shaft) must be reused.

Next: Reassembly

Thanks 42rocker!  Actually I did get it back together in time for the Ohio Fall Colors Tour which was last month.  I'm just now  getting around to posting my work in hopes that it will help someone else with their project.

Stay Safe and have a great Thanksgiving!

So as I started to reassemble I ran into problem number three.  The shaft included in the kit was too long and the ring gear would not slip over it.

My bench grinder was broke so I had to improvise a way to shorten the shaft.  A right angle grinder in a vise is probably not OSHA approved but worked.  I was very careful to only grind a little off at a time and let the shaft cool so as not to change the temper of the steel.  After whittling it down to length I rounded the shoulder a little to let the shaft slide through the other parts without catching.

Shortened shaft test fit. - OK

The rest of the locker assembly was straight forward until problem number four.  As Stan (Grampas Jeep) documented so well, there are 2 very important measurements that must be checked.  Both are described in the instruction book but are VERY easy to miss.  The first one makes sure that the shaft is centered between the drivers (parts in photo with stamped numbers) and is on page 3 in the book.  The second measurement is looking for a gap of no less than .145" and no more than .170" between the drivers and is on page 24 in the book.  This is AFTER the book states "Your Lock Right installation should now be complete" on page 23.  Unless you happen to turn the page you will miss it!  Thanks Stan for bringing that to our attention!

Both these adjustments are made with the thrust washer thickness.  Mine, using the original thrust washers, had the drivers centered over shaft but the gap between them was too wide.  I was getting short on time so I ordered shim washers from McMaster-Carr who got them to me in 2 days.  The washers are 1 3/4" ID and 2 3/4" OD.  I added a .012" thick shim washer to each side to bring the driver gap into the correct range.  I ordered the shim washers in carbon steel but in hindsight I should have done more research and maybe should have used harder steel.  McMaster-Carr offers them in spring steel and 2 types of stainless.  I'll be interested in others opinions on that.  For now I'll see how it goes and replace them later if needed.

Now it was time for final assembly.  I installed the ring gear on the carrier using red thread locker.  After torqueing the bolts I bent the tabs on the metal locks up against flats on the bolts.  Then with the help of a piece of wood and hammer tapping on the bearings the whole assembly snuggled back into place.  Once I was sure the bearings were fully seated in the housing and  there was no binding I reinstalled the caps in their original positions and torqued the bolts.  The axles slid back into place and after everything was bolted back up I was happy to find that the end play was about right on each side.  Evidently I didn't damage the passenger side after beating on it with a 16lb sledge.
Lastly, I used blue gasket maker and installed the diff cover tightening the bolts till the blue gooshed out a little all the way around.  I let it set up overnight and finished torqueing them the next day.

All buttoned up and ready for the OFCT.  I did drive it up to the empty parking lot at the school and went in circles both directions.  Turning as tight as it would go while coasting I could barely hear the locker clicking.  It was not even noticeable unless you were listening for it.  Making the turns under power definitely makes one tire slip a little.  Again, not worrisome but will have to be careful on ice or snow.

Hope this write up helps someone else with a similar locker install.  This was my first time ever having a diff cover off so hopefully I haven't steered someone wrong.  Please share your thoughts and comments.  I will report back on how I like the locker after I give it a work out.

Nice write up and demonstration of the locker install. Let us know what you think of it once you get off road. I installed one of these in the rear axle of my jeep and it was life changing! Much more capable.

I managed to get the locker installed just before the Ohio Fall colors Tour.  I ordered a Rhino vehicle tie down strap kit which which arrived in time.  Their straps have clips on the ends that prevent the hooks from disconnecting if the straps loosen up while traveling.  My brother Ron welded heavy duty D rings to my trailer.  All this was much better than my usual thrown together assortment of chains and ratchet straps and made me much more confident hauling the Jeep long distance.

I made it to Tar Hollow State Park Friday afternoon and found my campsite right at the meeting area.  This is right in front of my site.

Saturday started off cold with a heavy frost so it was nice to have the windshield up and the top on.  By the time we stopped here to eat lunch it had gotten pretty warm so the top came off and I put the windshield down.

Had a little wait on this steep decent while a repair was done at the bottom of the hill.  Glad I had redone the parking brake.

I can't say enough about what a great event this was!  Many thanks to Stev and those who put it together!

I wanted to report back on the performance of Grasshopper with the rear locker installed.  During the entire OFCT I don't think I ever spun a tire!  Admittedly the trails were pretty dry, but there were some muddy steep sections and some rocks to climb over.  I did get to pull another jeep with a strap.  I never once felt a shortage of traction and pretty much forgot the locker was there even on the paved roads.  So far I am very happy with the locker but the real test will be to get back to Southington and try the same obstacles as before to gage improvement.  Will report back then.

Next project:  Installing 12,000 lb. Badland Apex winch.

And eventually, a big one -  lower gears.

Nope.  Just general maintenance on the L134 Go Devil.  I did pull the oil pan to clean the oil pump intake screen and check for metal filings - OK.  I found out that there are several different oil filter housings that were used.  Thanks to the guys here on the page who documented that!  This engine has the head marked "Supersonic".   One of these days I want to check the compression.  The "WO" carb is missing some linkage that is present on carbs in the parts jeep fleet.  Investigating that is also on the list.  Overall it runs great so "If it ain't broke - don't fix it"!

Barry,

I started my locker the Wednesday evening before the OFCT and buttoned it up that Friday morning. I even topped of the diff fluid that morning while every one was showing up in the parking lot. Ran into similar issues. A few over torqued and loose ring gear bolts, cross shaft to long, and one of the axle shaft threads were pretty well chewed up. I’m pretty sure I was the Jeep you yanked out when I high centered on a rut lol.

Hey Jordan!  Merry Christmas!  Glad to see I'm not the only one to take projects right down to the wire!  I didn't realize you had also just put a locker in for the OFCT.  Have you had a chance to really put the rear locker to the test to see if it made a big difference?  Also, I'm sure someone will return the favor next time I'm hung up!LOL  Can't wait to wheel with you again!

Originally James and I had planned on doing some of the “harder” stuff on the following Sunday but with snapping the bell crank pin coming down Albright at the end of the day Saturday kinda put that out of reach. Since it was kind’ve dry that weekend I really didn’t notice much difference. the one place I did get stuck was when I high centered on the rear end and you yanked me out. I planned on bringing it with me down to Florida this week but a starting issue prevented me from even getting to play in the snow Christmas Eve.

Yep that was quite an adventure!  There were blessings to be found though -  It happened at the end so we got to wheel all day, we had gravity on our side going downhill, and we were all there to "kick steer" and work as a team!  Plus we all have a great story to tell!  I am sorry I missed you guys on Sunday - I've always wondered how you made out fording the river with the trailer with the jeep on it.
I would really like to get back to those trails and also try some of the harder stuff.  I'm sending you a PM with my cell# so we can keep in touch.

Have fun in Florida!

Good morning guys, been thinking about a winter project, possibly the lockers. Too cold to work on it in the barn, would bringing the axle in on the kitchen table be a breach of etiquette?
