The last thing to do before Southington was to make a new front bumper and "front porch" for the winch to sit on.
I thought I could just purchase a piece of 2" X 4" C channel. What was available was structural steel and the 2" sides got wider toward the inside corner. I didn't like the look of that so Ron said a solution would be to buy a piece of 4" 3/16" box tubing where the wall thickness was uniform around the corners and cut it in 1/2 lengthwise. That would also give me a spare bumper. Once again the plasma cutter earned it's keep! Now for the "front porch". I used some 3/16" plate steel that was laying around. First I welded a "shelf" across the front crossmember to support the back edge of the porch. I made these parts long because the shelf and porch are what would make the frame horns ridgid so that they would share the stress exerted by the steering box. I chamfered the edges where the bumper and porch meet to make room for a smooth weld. Winch mounted back on. Grasshopper ready to rock at Southington Offroad Park and the Spring Willys Reunion with 3 days to spare!! Hope this complete steering upgrade write up helps somebody, or at least makes interesting reading! -Barry |

Not to cast aspersions on your project or your Jeep 'cause it's pretty darn nice, but isn't a 12,000 lb winch a bit much for a CJ-2A? There is a danger of inadvertently pulling too hard and damaging your frame with that much pull.

Hi Ol Unreliable! Good question! Ya it's a bit oversized but at the time for only around 500 bucks it was waterproof, had wireless remote control, and most important to me, was already wound with 3/8" synthetic rope. I'm not worried about frame damage because I'll never attach the other end of my jeep to anything (Stationary Pull). The worst it could do is skid my jeep along. My other thought was that it would be unlikely to over heat. I definitely don't like the look of the giant size of it. I think it looks too modern. That's why I sewed up a canvas cover out of leftover material from my top to keep it hidden. I'll probably paint the hawse black too. I would have loved to have been able to hide it down in behind the bumper but with the Saginaw box in there it's a no go. I know Harbor Freight stuff sometimes have poor reputations, but this winch has been great for me. I used it twice last weekend to pull myself off the rocks and I love the wireless remote control.

Okay, I can see all the good points in favor of that winch. The size and weight are not ideal, but it can't be beat for doing the job. You'll never have to double-line it, that's for sure!

Southington Offroad Park and the Spring Willys Reunion were great! I got a big kick out of meeting other members from here on the page in person. Next year, in addition to our names on our name tags, I think we should also put our CJ2A handles on there so we can put faces to the folks we communicate with online.
At Southington the new Volvo/Saginaw power steering worked great! I got my self stuck on the rocks and it was so nice to be able to turn the wheel with the just heel of my hand. The 3/8" thick skid plate that my brother Ron makes definitely earned it's keep. I thought my only damage from the day was ripping the tail pipe off while backing off a ledge to try a different line. As it turns out, at some point during the day I bent the passenger side front spring. |

Last year at the reunion I picked up a set of Rancho 2 1/2" lift springs. Having bent my front spring I figured it was time to try the Ranchos. Here's the bent Crown stock spring next to the Rancho.
Installing the front springs was very straight forward. I just had to cut the U bolts a little shorter since the Ranchos are a thinner stack. Even with the added height the front pinion angle was fine. Not so with the rears! Even with the rear stock Crowns at full droop I could feel the U joint starting to bind and with the added 2 1'2 inches it locked up completely. I experimented with wedge shims and settled on 6 degree ones from Omix on Amazon. (Part number 18206.01) I liked that they are curved on the bottom to match the springs. Here is the test fit that corrected the pinion angle. These shims are 2 1/2" wide so I had to cut them down to 1 3/4" to match the spring width. It was easiest to cut them on the bandsaw. The next problem was that the spring center bolt was now too short to extend through the shim into the spring perch. I could not readily find bolts with an extra long pin section. I read that some folks would use a long allen head bolt and add nuts tight under the head to get the proper length and then grind the flats off the nuts to the right diameter. I didn't have time to wait for McMaster Carr to ship because I was getting ready for the Bantam Jeepfest in Butler PA. so I used what I had on hand. I just needed to extend the 1/2" dia. pin section about another 3/4" so I ground chamfers onto the end of the bolt and the end of some 1/2" round stock and welded them together. Then I just cut them to the length I needed. All together. New ride height. The Ranchos added 2 1/4" which I really appreciated at Bantam last weekend. I did all the Black trails as well as the biggest rock pile - all of which normally require 33 or 35 inch tires. Jury is still out on the Ranchos. I love the extra clearance but feel like I gave up some flex. Edited by Barry S - 12 June 2023 at 8:38pm |

Like I needed another project... but I just couldn't help it! This little guy followed me home.
Looks to be all there and unmolested other than missing the tail light. Guess I'm a member of the Bantam club!
I suppose I should post this in the Bantam section. Model T3-C Serial 25487 |

For the fall ride we should meet at my house, load up your bantam and my David Bradley trailer with camping gear for the weekend, and drive the Jeeps down to the Camp ground. 😂
