I thought I replied to this thread earlier, but obviously not. My '2A has 3.73's and Dauntless (and SM420) . . I wish I could "click fingers" and try out out 4.10-4.27, but I am not unhappy with 3.73 We can take a ride this weekend, and see what you think. You might want to use those BuckShots if it is going to be wet in Southington. :-)

It will be great to see you and Wilson - only 2 days to go! I'll really appreciate hearing your experiences. I'm still finishing up some small stuff but should be good to go. I like the look of those tires - pretty aggressive but 2 of them are about bald. Luckily my brother offered to loan me his wheels and tires for the weekend.

Tonight was fluids and grease night. One more surprise - I think this was 90 weight gear lube at one time - not sure what it is now! Glad I'm checking everything for this weekend. I also got the Sears lockout hubs redone and installed.

Thanks Rob - glad to see your planning on the Ohio FCT! I'm really looking forward to it - especially after watching your videos from last year. Actually the CJ5 is a parts donor for the drive train. I was planning on using a CJ3A frame to build on but I think I'll use the CJ5 frame as it's only 1 inch longer, the entire drive train is already in place, and I can make a 2A or 3A body fit. I will be installing the sm420 in it though. I'll be bringing Grasshopper to the OFCT. I'm researching a new set of springs for him right now.

Wow! I can't believe I haven't posted anything since June. I need to catch this thread up. Southington was AWSOME! Got to know a bunch of great people from the page and continue to keep in touch with them.
A few of the culprits and their rides! In addition to making some great friends this event was a huge learning experience for me. Our group was a mix of modified rigs and stockers. I learned tons from the experience of the drivers as well as seeing the difference that some modifications make. I was nervous about being able to keep up but we worked as a group and I really appreciated everyone's encouragement and patience.

Yep, Jeff likes to push the envelope! He made it over this unassisted. I got to spot for him.

Here are a few pics from Southington.
WILLYS PARKING ONLY!! I borrowed these brand new tires and freshly painted rims from my brother Ron off of his CJ3A. I promised I wouldn't get them muddy... Oops. Making it to the top of Blueberry Hill. If you look thru the roll bar you can see Ron(Jeep Fever) watching. I was very happy with the disk brakes on the way back down! I made it up this obstacle with some coaching from jpet and friends. It was tough because there was a mud hole in front that got your tires wet plus you had to keep your wheels from falling into the gap in the middle. I got high centered at the top though and needed a little tug but was happy because I watched a modern Toyota try it and he couldn't make it. All in all it was a great first time out for me and Grasshopper did well. If anyone is interested is seeing more, jpet and Millennium Falcon posted awesome video and pics at https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/southington-offroad-pretrial-for-2021-reunion_topic47242_page1.html. Hopfully we can arrange to go back to Southington Off Road Park as part of the Spring Reunion!

Sooo, I learned from Southington that I need to improve Grasshopper in 3 main areas to make him more trail capable. Those are: Ground Clearance, Lockers, and Lower Gearing. I decided to start with ground clearance. After much conversation with Jeff, Ron, and Seth, plus reading Stan's postings, I decided to go with stock springs and NDTs. Here is what I started with - broken and worn out springs and 15" street tires.
After reading not great stuff about Omix I wanted Crown springs and parts. No one had everything I needed in one place so I ordered pieces from different places and eventually had everything together that I needed. I did have to order Omix pivot bolts though and sure enough, one was missing the grease fitting. No big deal just purchased a fitting locally. Installation started off going smoothly. Here is a pic of one of the old springs laying on top of it's replacement. I hit a snag when I went to install the shackles. My 47CJ2A has right hand thread on the passenger front and drivers rear corners, and left hand thread on the drivers front and passenger rear corners so I has ordered 2 rights and 2 lefts. It turned out that Crown had put lefts in the right hand thread boxes so I had all left hand thread shackles. Luckily I was able to steal 2 good rights from the parts jeep fleet to complete the project and Crown eventually sent me the correct parts. Springs installed. I tightened the shackle bolts down till they stopped then backed them off about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn so there would be no binding as the springs flex. Also, I made sure to cut the excess length off the U bolts to keep them from catching on rocks. Eventually I want to make U bolt plate rock sliders - more on that later. Next: Wheels and tires.

New springs are nice to get installed.
If you are going to wheel that thing on the rocks, I would suggest eventually going to this M38A1 shackle. They are all right hand thread so you don't have to carry two different spares and it has a plate on the open side to increase the strength. Since I have gone to these I have not broken a shackle. (knock on wood). I can't remember, but these ones from Kaiserwillys are probably OMIX, but I think the extra plate is worth taking the chance on them. https://www.kaiserwillys.com/category/suspension/shackles-parts/leaf-spring-shackle-kit-heavy-duty-fits-52-66-m38a1

Hi Stan, That's great advice. I was thinking that the extra plate would be good, I did not realize that they would all be right hand thread. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

Tires: Even though I've always loved the classic look of NDT's on old Willys I really did not want them on mine. I was sure that modern tread technology had to have made vast improvements in the last 70 years right? Luckily I have friends that are way more experienced and knowledgeable than me to prove that is not necessarily true.! I spend countless hours watching videos of Jeff and Stan tackling impossible climbs on NDT's (my wife calls it watching Jeep porn). That plus conversations with the guys I wheeled with at SOR finally convinced me and lured me over to the dark side. Grasshopper got a brand new set of square shouldered NDT's! Since I am shooting for better ground clearance I went up to 750/16's.
I wanted to mount them on as wide of stock rims as I could so I bought a set of wheel calipers and took inventory of my parts jeep fleet. Turns out there is a real hodgepodge of rims out there mostly 4.5" wide. There's a mix of all kinds of rims but believe it or not, 5 of the jeeps each had 1 16"x5" rim including the MB in the basement! Found this one in the mix. Original 4.5" Luzon Red with the pin stripe! Had to uncover the MB in the basement to steal the 1 16x5 rim that was on it. It was the first sunlight the Jeep had seen in nearly 2 decades! Next I had to get all those old tires off. Que the Harbor Freight Armstrong style tire machine! The toughest one was the old NDT - I had to finally cut the bead with a sawzall. I was pretty whupped after all that! 5 5" rims - 5 different colors! I gave the rims to my brother Ron to sandblast and paint. He was happy to do it - probably so I wouldn't borrow his wheels any more! Ron has a special process for cleaning painted and rusted metal. He throws the object into the campfire and heats it to just short of starting to glow red. This burns off any oils and most of the paint as well as loosens and pops off most of the rust. He calls this Pacification. He then takes it out of the fire and lets the metal cool down slowly. (Important! - Don't be impatient and put water on it). After that the object is much easier to sand blast and paint. This works for cast iron and steel - NOT aluminum! Finished! My brother does great work! Grasshopper's new stance! Ground clearance before and after specs. Next I had the passenger seat upholstered to match and I was ready to go to the Northern Ohio Flatfender Willys Gathering!

Hello brother Bar, thanks for the on the paint, but to be clear my paint is usually far from good but good from afar, perfect for jeep projects prone to "pin striping"

I haven't been doing much here on the page recently because I am trying to come to grips with the sudden loss of my Dad on November 7 at age 89. Dad liked Jeeps and I was so excited to show him this one on the day I picked it up that I went straight to my folks house before I even took it home. This is a photo from that day in September of last year. Dad and Mom jumped in and took it out for a short spin. After they didn't return for a long time I was getting worried that they had broke down. No, they just were enjoying their joy ride! When they finally came back Dad double clutched into first like a pro and I remember thinking "He's still got it!". The grins on their faces say it all. I am so glad they got to do that.
In preparing for Dad's funeral we stumbled across this picture of him. It is marked "Camp Pickett 1952 - 53. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if thats an MB or a M38. Thanks -Barry |
