I am sorry to hear about your father. I can’t imagine how tough that would be.

Finding that picture of Dad and the Jeep when he was in the service has me rethinking what to do with the MB in the basement.  Hmmmm.

Ok.  Time to continue bring this thread up to date.  The Northern Ohio Flatfender Willys Gathering was awesome! It was held the last Sunday in August.  Bob C. did a great job of hosting it again even though Covid made it a little more challenging.  He made arrangements to have perfect weather as well as provide a great meal!

Here are a few pics.

The next event that I had to prepare for was the Ohio Fall Colors Tour.  Grasshopper had no top so I decided to try making a bikini top in case of rain during the event.  Jpet has done a great job documenting his top making expertise here on the page.  I studied Jeff's methods and then modified them a little for my own needs. The drawing showing the layout and measurements of the holes in the windshield was extremely helpful.  Thanks Jeff!!

First item of business - the 2 end holes for the common sense fasteners were drilled out too large and out of place.

Mig welded shut. Small bursts - tack, tack, tack. Then ground somewhat smooth.

New hole drilled.  Correct size and position.  The metal was thicker here from welding so I was worried about breaking the screw off the common sense fastener so I used a #12 sheet metal screw to cut threads in first.

The thumb turn fasteners are called "common sense fasteners".  They come in a few styles but the ones I needed have a #12 screw on the back side.  I shopped online for them and found prices of around 6 bucks apiece plus then you had to buy the eyelet and backing plates separately.  Then I stumbled across these kits which include all 3 pieces for about 2 bucks!  Plus when I called out there they were extremely helpful.  Here's the link:

I wanted black so I just painted all the pieces.

For the canvas I bought a 6' x 8' 12oz waxed canvas tarp from the local Family Farm and Home for about 30 bucks.  Here's the link:

This is where I made a BIG mistake.  I wanted to make sure the canvas was already shrunk before I cut and sewed it so it would not shrink later and not fit.  I soaked it in water till it was a wet as I could get it and then threw it in the dryer on high heat.  Smart right?  The dryer heat melted the wax and coated the drum and interior with a nice layer of greenish wax.  I spent 2 hours running the dryer empty on high to soften the wax so I could wipe it off quick with paper towels before it cooled again.  Luckily I got it all cleaned up before my wife noticed!  It worked out great but if I had to do it again I don't know if I would use waxed canvas again.

Next I printed out a copy of Jpets windshield screw hole layout.  Here is a link to his drawing.  Be carful because all the holes are not spaced evenly (possibly due to windshield wiper hole).  Also be aware of driver/passenger sides.

Here is a link to Jeff's whole "Make your own top thread".

I started at the front.  First I cut off all the factory edges and grommets.  I oriented the tarp with the 8' side across the windshield.  I folded the front edge back 2" and sewed it.  Then I marked all the spots for the windshield fasteners using Jeff's drawing.

Next I installed all the common sense grommets.  You can spend a bunch of money on the special punch if you are going to do lots of these but it can be done just fine without it. Here's how.

Center the grommet, points down, against the canvas and press it down to mark where the points will go thru.  Then take a very pointy very sharp hobby knife and carefully put slits thru the canvas.

Stick the grommet points up thru the canvas from the underside and add the backing plate.

Hammer the points down trapping the backing plate.  I used a flat ended wood dowel.

Then using your hobby knife just cut out the center.

Piece of cake!

Grommets done!

The next step was to mount the canvas to the windshield.

Then fold the corners to make a pocket.  Mark where the edges will meet.  Turn the corner inside out and sew it.  (My wife showed me how to do that!)

The next step was to cut the sides.  To hold the canvas in position I punched some holes in the rear edge of the canvas, ran string through and tied them to the back of the jeep.  I used a straight edge to mark a level line starting at the front corner and measured up at the roll bar to make sure each side was the same.  I left them a little long figuring I can always come back and make a final trim.

Next was the hardest part of the project for me - making the corner pockets at the curve in the roll bar.  I just kept folding the pockets and sides behind the roll bar until I had a good fit.  One good thing about the waxed canvas was that it held a fold well.

These are the pockets before sewing.  Notice the curved sew lines.

After sewing the pockets I made the straps and experimented with where to attach them to the canvas to hold it taut in all directions.  I used safety pins to attach the straps as I tried different spots figuring the wax will seat the pin holes up and if not they're near the back anyway.  I sewed a short piece of webbing to the buckles and attached them to the straps near the middle.  This way the strap goes down thru the footmans loop then back up to the buckle to connect.  Once I found the sweet spot for the strap attachment points I used a straight edge to trim the sides behind the roll bar pockets.

Straps attached and canvas marked for sides and arch cuts. I just eyeballed the arch.

Ready for edging (Binding tape - from Wal Mart)

Finished!

Had some scraps left over so I made some chain covers to quiet them and keep them from banging the paint up.

Hope this bikini top project helps someone else.  Feel free to share!

Up next for Grasshopper:  Rear locker install!
