In my attempt to keep entertained, I want to replace the rear axel outer wheel bearings. I'm getting a rear vibration on deceleration that I suspect is the bearings. I don't have a three point puller and need to order one. I'm looking for recommendations on a decent but not excessively expensive puller. I have no other need for it. Preferably something on Amazon, AutoZone or some place that is currently shipping so that I have some hope that it will be shipped out to me. I have 11" brakes if that makes a difference.
Also, what other tools are suggested for the job? Anything special that I need to get the seals out? Any secrets to doing the job? Thanks, Micah

Autozone would probably rent you the tool for nothing if you bought the bearings there. They usually charge you a deposit on the tool and refund the cost back when it is returned.
The one important thing to remember is that when you put the puller on the hub remember to put the axle nut back on loosely and after the puller has a bunch of tension on it smack the end of the puller shaft with a hammer. The hub should just pop off. |

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't dive deep into their site before posting, but they don't appear to have a suitable puller in their loan-a-tool program or one currently for sale. https://www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools/loaner-axle-flange-puller?filterByKeyWord=puller&fromString=search&isIgnoreVehicle=false

This is about the cheapest offering on Amazon about 80 bucks. I can see why a guy would think 2X if it was gonna be a single use tool. I've got one of similar quality I would loan out. If you lived down the street you could just swing by (with the proper frosty cold bribe) and pick it up. To ship it medium flat rate is about 15 bucks each way now so you would be in 30 bucks and the wait for me to get to the PO.. (we're on lockdown too).. It's a valuable tool to have on hand.. You think you'll use it just once? Mr. Murphy might have other plans.. Edited by RICKG - 30 Mar. 2020 at 2:03am |

Rick,
Thanks for the offer. I'm thinking only the one time. Don't jimx me! I only want to be in there once. I need to order the races too, so I will see if I can get them shipped together. Kansas, Thanks for the alternative. Looks like exactly the same part. Besides the puller, is there anything special to get the seal out? Micah

I also have a "one time use" puller you can borrow. I pulled an old tractor flywheel with it and it worked beautifully! I'll pay shipping to you, you pay it back to me. I'm in 23117. I hate to see it just sit. It hydraulic and I can send a pic if you're interested. Rick

Rick,
Thanks for the offer, very nice of you. I found one on eBay for $45 shipped to me. The more I think about it, I'm probably going to have to do this again when I do a full restoration.

Are the 11" drums behind the hub (attached by the swaged studs) If so do not use a two jaw puller it will bend the drums. Guess you have truck or utility wagon brakes?
If you have the later model CJ 5 brakes the drum slips off after the rim is removed Edited by jeeper50 - 30 Mar. 2020 at 11:58pm |

Jeeper,
Good question. I'm going to have to pull a wheel and take a look. I think they are CJ5. To get the race out, are you guys using a slide hammer? Also, it sounds like sometimes the bearing gets stuck on the axel requiring it to be taken to be pressed off. Is this correct? Micah

The bearing is designed to be a press fit on the axle so yes, you will have to press it of and the new one back on.

The race or cup comes out with the axle and bearing. Once you get some space you can use the axle as a slide hammer to get it out, if you need to. Don’t forget to put the new cup on the axle before you press the bearing on, and the bearing goes on backwards to what most people are used to.

Thanks Bruce. I had to take a second look at the parts book to realize that the race was on the outside. I almost bought a couple tools that I did not need.

I couldn't remember what brakes I had on her. I found an old photo on my phone taken when I last worked on them. CJ5. Saved me from having to pull a wheel.
Puller on order. Summit has my Timken races in stock. I already have the bearings. I need to order the seals. I have not driven her much lately. I recently rotated the tires. The other day, I noticed my driveshaft was a indexed a couple splines out of alignment. I fixed that and drove her today. I noticed a lot less vibration. I'm curious to drive her a bit more before I pull her apart for bearings. Micah
