I'd like to hear more about the who/what/when/where/why the axle breakage on the one Jeep.
Front or rear or both ?

Steve broke passenger rear and passenger front axles. Not 100% sure how and where they broke. We just noticed they were not turning.
I’ll try to put a report together when I get my ducks in a row. On our way home, we stopped by Moab to do Long Canyon, Wipeout Hill, and a little Hell’s Revenge. ... then yesterday, some of the group headed to Ouray. They are doing Black Bear today. Wade and I went to Grand Junction to do Billings Canyon. This is one of the toughest trails we have done. One of the biggest adventures of the week was trying to find a hotel last night on the way home. Headed home now. Edited by jpet - 31 July 2021 at 10:23am |

I was riding with Steve when the axles broke. His right rear axle first broke when we were trying to climb a rock shelf. He lost traction, the jeep hopped a bit, and bam. The second axle (right front) broke only a few hundred yards later as we were climbing some loose rock. The jeep was struggling without having both rear tires digging (he has lockrites in both diffs). Poor Steve drove 2900 miles to do the Rubicon and he had both failures on the first day. Tough breaks! The good of it is that we were close enough to the start point that he didn't have to ride a rope for miles on that trail. I don't see how open differentials would have much success on the Rubicon.

Yesterday we had a great start in Ouray, but got hit with a thunderstorm near the top of Imogene. Ryan rolled up his windows while Steve and I braced ourselves to get soaking wet. It was a memorable ride down the mountain.
All the hotels were booked, and only a KOA available. Between that and more thunderstorms for today, we all headed out last night. I have some great pics to upload when I'm home.

Here’s the last of my pics. I’ll try to get a video put together before too long.

I made it home and hit the pillow around 1:30 AM.
What a wonderful trip!! The experience went well for me and my crew. My grandson Dylan did 90% of the driving which I am very happy about. I was sorry to see Steve miss the trail but I was glad to hook back up with him in Moab for a day. We had a few break downs but I felt the group did a Gr8 job of improvising to get everyone through safely. I’m not sure what Rick and Wade’s thoughts are but I felt the trail was easier for the most part other than the little sluice which was significantly harder in the middle. 3 Jeeps tried it. 3 Jeeps had to winch. The big sluice was much easier, or else we are just getting more experienced. Thanks again everyone who came and I hope you had as much fun as I did. If not, rest up and re-evaluate this week when you are back to work I’ll put together some video in the coming days. There is lots of clips to sift through. |

Broken axles fixed thanks to Chassender (Jay) who arranged for replacements near Tahoe. Took them to Monticello Utah where Rockcred (Ted) popped in them quickly (he is really good). After Ouray I was soaking wet and cold. Stayed at the most expensive Super 8 ($225) for the last room (a smoking room). Not home yet but I certainly had a memorable trip. In my warped mind, it was fun and worth the 6,000 miles. Thanks JPET.

I made it home yesterday evening. What an absolute blast!! This was the most fun I've ever had in a Jeep, and it was great to cross this huge item off my bucket list. I enjoyed meeting everyone from the forum. Thank you to those who helped guide over obstacles, repair broken parts, took photos/video, and overall making this event a legendary one. I'm so grateful to have experienced it. Rubicon Trail

For those interested in what broke on the Rubicon this shows both broken passenger side axles. Best I can recall is that at the top of the granite bowl I went up a moderate ledge and lost traction. Tried to power out and an axle snapped. Think one of the two may have broken just before going over a crack then the other had to take more stress than it could handle. Getting back to the trailhead with "left side drive" was interesting in that it really reinforced the need to take it slow and avoid excess power (and of course to have Jeff pull me over a couple of spots). All in all a most interesting, worthwhile, trip. Got home yesterday afternoon.
