Best thing to do is get some basic measurements and start looking, some little junk yards will let you walk around and see what they have. Security is the worst thing, most stock consoles don’t lock and if they do it’s all plastic and easily broken. There are some really nice aftermarket all steel consoles that would probably work but you’re going to pay for it.
The ammo can console is a classic and can be made to be lockable, I’ve got a large one in my YJ and really like the storage space, plus it’s waterproof. Edited by 48willys - 29 June 2020 at 2:32pm |

You could possibly get a glove box lid for a MB or M38 and do some cuting and welding to add it to the CJ2A dash. A simple box could be fabricated to fit the opening.
As far as a "console" I too have used ammon boxes bolted to the floor for this. Works well.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

The ammo can can be bolted to the floor between the seats AND it can be made to lock for security. It is designed to be waterproof and it will remain that way after installation. It isn't exactly stylish, but who cares...

If one is "cutting", I would opt for the dash glovebox with a MB/GPW door. You can make the compartment decently large if you box the whole thing off to the firewall but that would probably depend on whether or not you have the Harrison heater. Some fabrication required-------

I love the ammo box idea for a console & no need for a glove box. Another issue/concern solved.
Thanks

Ammo cans are great - but if they only had a lock and a few drink holders!

I imagine that with a little creative fabrication and welding that drink holders and a lock could be had. Take the handle off the top and add drink holders. I would bet there is a way to lock the lid lock down with a U-shaped piece of steel welded behind the round hole where it sticks through the hole. Add padlock of your choice...
...valuable goodies safe from water and theft...drink holders on top... |

I bet the Craftsman magnetic holder would stick to the side of an ammo can just fine....or other similar brands of toolbox accessories.

If you want to make something if you are going to mount a box on the top of the tool box without reaching down into the narrow space between the tool box and the fuel tank. You can make a box 9" wide and 17" long without any interference with the shift levers. If you make it 9" tall its pretty good sized without being to hard to climb over to get into the back. |

I use a .30 cal ammo can, held down by a really strong Sportsmans Guide magnet. Can lock it tight, and to the seat if you don"t want to drill tub. Works great!

Weld a lock hasp to the box. Pretty easy old idea from 40 years ago. Yes it can be defeated with some effort but so can everything else. Will stop most dishonest people and all of the honest people.

My brother did the lock on his like this, it’s just half of a twist locking hasp with paddle cut out. mine has a padlock, the padlock is simpler but does make noise when on the trail.
