Took the cover off the front differential today. Glad I did, there was still adjust in the bottom that didn't drain out. Got that cleaned out. Internals all looked great! Didn't get to the rear today, as I've got an almost 9 month old that woke up from her nap. I'll try to get to the rear tomorrow!

Finally got new (used) tires for the back end to replace the dry rotted ones that were on there. Got a quick stupid question though. The tires on the back are 30x9.5R15, the tires on the front are 235/70R15. The rear tires are just slightly larger than the front tires. Is this going to cause an issue? I can't really see it being a problem in 2WD, but would it be a problem in 4WD?

That will be a problem. 235/70-15s are 28" in diameter. The 30" fronts are 7% larger. That means you will be scrubbing tires in 4WD. On hard surfaces it will cause a lot of crow-hopping, tire wear and eventually could lead to broken parts. On slippery surfaces it will make steering difficult as you will always have tires slipping.

Gotcha. Didn't realize it would be an issue until I got them home and started thinking about it. Think it'll be fine in 2WD though? Was hoping to take Papa Doc on his first crawl around the neighborhood tomorrow.

Yeah you will be fine in 2wd, just be sure the rears are the same size and don’t run it in 4wd. It will bind the drivetrain running in 4wd and could break something.

That's what I was thinking. Thank you for the confirmation! I'll get 4 that are the same size before I go anywhere i might need 4WD.

Cut out seat pans from 3/4" treated plywood. Just need to drill them for holes. Current plan is to get a set of seat covers from Ian. Also made a set of footings/risers out of 1/2" horse stall mat.

Took Papa Doc on his first trip around the block this afternoon! Just did a 1st gear crawl, because my stepdad had told me the brakes didn't work. Next thing to work on will be the brakes because they ABSOLUTELY do not work! The brake pedal won't even press at all. Looks like Brennan's brackets and an order from Rock Auto are in my future...
Has anyone compiled a list of the best fit products for Brennan's TracKick brake mod? I know I've read on here that some parts just work and fit better than others, especially when it comes to brake lines.

I ordered Brennan's brackets today, as well as the stuff I need for disc brake conversion on all 4 corners. Going to likely be ordering a new master cylinder and plunger from Walck's soon. Need to crawl under and see what that looks like.

While I'm waiting on all the parts for the disc brake conversion to get here, plus a new MC, push rod, and wheel bearings and races, i put on the seat cushions and covers from Big Willy Jeep! They sure make you sit a lot higher! I can dang near stretch my legs!

Been watching a lot of MetalShaper on YouTube today, getting ready for replacing the bearings, races, and seals! I'm planning on ordering those tomorrow, as well as a new MC and associated parts. Luckily, my neighbor across the street has significantly more auto maintenance experience than I do and is willing to help me get all this done!

Good to have met you this morning. You have a lot of enthusiasm for your project. It has come a long way since you started and it is one of the projects that I watch for on the Forum. Keep the pictures coming...

It was great to meet you as well! I'll definitely be contacting you for advice as I continue with Papa Doc. Thanks so much for selling me the rims and tires, I'm really looking forward to seeing how they look on PD. Do you have close up pictures of your tailgate rig? I really like how it's set up.

Finally got started on the disc brake conversion! Had a bit of trouble getting the drums off the front axle, the pads were pretty tight against them. Got them off though. Got the caliper brackets on as well. Gonna take the drums and hubs to a local auto body shop tomorrow to see if they can press the old lugs out.
Also, it seems someone previously filled the steering knuckle with differential oil. Got some Corn Head arriving tomorrow. |

Well this isn't what I wanted to see when I removed the castle nuts on the rear axle. Looks like the last person to have the hubs off hammered the keys way in there! Really hope my hubs aren't split! I'll hopefully find out tomorrow when my hub puller gets here. I tried the loaners at O'Reilly's and AutoZone, both were too small.
In other news, though, I got the rubber hoses attached on the front. Waiting for my lug studs to get in, then I can take them to get pressed in. |

Good news/bad news time.
Good news: my hubs weren't split! I don't know how it didn't happen, but I'm thankful they're intact! Also, the hub puller worked like a charm and I got the rear hubs off just fine Bad news: I have to replace the brake line from the rear frame back. The old hard line was too corroded to get it disconnected without snapping it and the old rubber line was too stuff and the connections too corroded. Thankful I don't have to replace all the way to the MC though... Oh well, continuing my education!
