Working on getting Doc ready for Herculiner. Got both floorboards and the center section brushed down, as well as the covers. Hit it all with rust converter. It'll all get a coat of epoxy primer before the Herculiner. I'll be doing the cargo bed the same way.

This is going to be a stupid question. Is there supposed to be a gasket between the transmission tunnel cover and the tub?

I don't believe there was a gasket used there...and there are no stupid questions here. If you want to try a gasket there, then it couldn't hurt but I don't see a reason for one. If you go through deep water, it's going to get in the cab anyway through a dozen different holes that are designed in the firewall.

Thanks for the reply! Doc had a rubber mat in the floorboard and it was under the tunnel cover, so I wasn't sure!

It looks like the condition of your floorboard is pretty good. I notice a hole on the right hand side of the tunnel that someone has used as a place to remove the transfer case shifter pivot. That can be handy and can be covered up with a fabricated cover and four self tapping screws if you want.

There was actually a plate covering that hole! The plate will get put back on and Herc rolled over it to seal it in. I won't have a need to remove it again once it's put back in.

The floor itself is not in terrible condition. Has some pitting, but I've wheeled all the rust out and it got hit with rust converter. Got some sealing primer to go on prior to the Herc.

Got the skid plate off and cleaned up. Sprayed it, the undersides of the floor plates, and the underside of the transmission tunnel cover with spray on Herculiner, more to see if I like the look than anything else. I think it'll work fine for where I'm using it.

Hoping to get the transmission and transfer case drained today to get them ready for filling.

I probably wouldn’t seal it with the liner, it will make a nice place for rust to get under the liner, unless you can seal it from the backside to keep water from getting between the floor and plate. Besides, if you ever need to pull the transmission or transfer case it would be handy for getting that pin out of the shift levers.

You make a fair point.  I'll have to see what I can do to protect the backside from further rusting.

When your Willys hasn't been cleaned in a while... Scraped all this off the transmission, transfer case, and support. There's more there than the picture would suggest. I'm still trying to locate the tranny fill and drain plugs, haha!!

Did another Herc spray test. This time on the fuel spout housing. I really dig the texture of this stuff. More sprayed stuff to come!

Drilled the hole in the tub to run the new fuel line from the polymer tank. Gotta get a step but to bore it out big enough for the grommet I'm making (from a larger piece of hose) to protect the fuel line. Getting closer to being done with fuel!

Started prepping the cargo area for sealing primer and Herculiner. Got a bit to go yet.

Changed the transmission and transfer case oil today. The old stuff was good in volume, so it's not leaking near as bad as I thought it was. It did, however, have a bit of a bronze glint to it, making me wonder if a PO used EP transmission oil...

Also finished scuffing the cargo area by hand with a 60 grit sanding sponge. It'll be ready for priming soon.

Took the old radiator out today. Need to order gaskets for the water pump and water outlet, new radiator hoses, new thermostat and retainer. Kind of bummed the new radiator doesn't have mounting holes for the fan shroud.

Also, does anyone know where I can get the little retaining clips and bolts that screw in from the backside of the grill? I can't find them on Walcks or KW. It's an interesting type of bolt, not like a normal bolt and I don't know what that style is called.

Also got the cab and cargo area primered and ready for Herculiner. Ran out of time today, so that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Are you talking about the screws and clips that hold the radiator to the grill? I’ve never had a cj3a but if I’m thinking of the right clips and bolts, they should be readily available at any good parts store with a body hardware selection.
I don’t know why they don’t drill the shroud holes, it made me nervous drilling them too. Use a short drill bit, and put some blocks of wood between the core and the where you are drilling.

These are the bolts and clips I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same ones.

So you've drilled the shroud holes before and had no issues? I might have to give it a try. I know the shroud helps increase the efficiency of the cooling system, or so I've read.
