CJ2A #23353 came to me from its original owner in North California. She had spent at least the past 37 years in a garage with a hard top. The family had brush painted the exterior of the tub with a different shade of green but had left the underside, engine compartment and interior alone. The wheels were also original paint and have been discussed in this forum under 'Autumn Yellow'.
I used several sheet metal parts as samples and had the local PPG Paint Dealer match the green. We also used the Ditzler codes. I think it is a perfect match to what I had. I have given this formula to several other owners and they have also had great success.
I agree that these formulas should be shared with others to maintain the 'original' look during the restoration process. I hope others will provide their formulas of their original colors too.
I believe this green is a correct match to the original shade of Pasture Green on 23353.

Hope this will help others as well.

Are you saying that the interior, as in your first pic, is the original color? (And judging from the fact that such things as the windshield latches are NOT painted would lead me to believe the same.)
If so, then are you also saying that the new exterior color, as you've painted it in the third and fourth pics are the _same_ color? If that's the case, then it would certainly indicate the same sort of discrepancy that Sean had mentioned in a posting with a blue wrench...lighting. On my screen, the interior shot is a much lighter, and gray-er color than in the latter two. |

Hi Jack...Yes...Sean is absolutely correct about this color difference issue. Photos are hard to use for any accuracy. Especially when you use a flash as in this first picture.
I have many pictures supporting the original finishes on various small parts, and the Pasture green. I used the inside of the grill, the inside of the headlight rings and the underside of the tool box lid for samples. No worries...Here is another of original color picture for example.

I figured I would throw this out here. I'm using PPG DBC two stage paint so Howard's paint mix formula didn't work for me. But the NAPA in town had the original Willys Paint chips. After getting some close matches we came to a code that matches darn near exact (to the chip). The code is a Nissan color called Tank Green. NIS D12. As I'm color-blind, it looked pretty darn good to me.

It's a good thing your Napa has the "chips".

No no! It's a TANK that you should be looking for Gary! (and I was wondering about that "color blind" thing, too. Maybe that's what we should ALL suffer from! )

I had my best friend (not color blind) there to help and the Nissan color was the closest match we could find. The color is called "Tank Green". And I believe it was available for one or two years on the 240SX.
The benefit to me of using a pre-established color code is the ability to go to any NAPA give them the code and get paint in an hour if I needed to do repairs. The benefit of using the two stage paint is it's way more durable and easy to repair than single stage. I've done the single stage route before. Never again... Well, I would be tempted to try the Imron line, but special equipment is needed to spray it and color matches are difficult to do with it. Edited by wyowillys46 - 30 June 2007 at 3:10pm |

has anyone used the Beachwood pasture green? by the way i think, if they have the autumn yellow dead on, shouldnt the pasture green be the same way? if so, is it the paint type that sways people from using it? just not durable enough, not the right shade? thoughts?
thanks

Eric,
My first comment to purchasing Pasture Green from Beachwood is the cost. You would need a full Gallon of paint of the Green...and that is close to do all the sheet stock on a CJ...Check the shipping costs as this much paint is ususally considered hazardous material. Let us know what you find in hard numbers, please.
For the wheels...a quart does the job and is usually not subject to the same shipping fees due to small volume. This is the primary reason I went the direction I did in having a local company make my green paint.
I would be willing to bet that Beachwoods Green is right on too, however.

Paint prices fluctuate. And it is expensive. But, you get what you pay for wrt paint. It's one area I will never skimp on from now on.
