Son and I were eating lunch outdoors at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup New Mexico this afternoon when a man in medical scrubs came up to the railing and asked if the jeep on the trailer next to the hotel was ours. Said he had a 47 when he lived in Bolivia. Said how much he liked it and how great it was. He very much wanted to buy ours. Told him I got mine in Albuquerque. He was upset he didn't get it. Said if I found anyone at the events we were headed for to let them know he wanted to buy one. I am posting this in hopes someone can make him happy and sell him a flatfender. Said to get to him through his business, "Small Fry Dentistry" in Gallup.

We were talked into the Presidential Suite at the El Rancho a few years back....biggest motel bathroom I have ever seen !! (the room itself was HUGE)
We stopped mid afternoon just to take pictures and the super nice staff talked us into a n overnight stay. I'm glad they did.....if anybody wants to stay in a neat old (well kept) motel with lots of history, check it out sometime. Google it. |

Oh Boy Howdy you had me worried there for a moment, Steve. Of the (probably) five times I've been through Gallup, three times involved being stuck there due to a breakdown. Two different times with a tour bus loaded with NASCAR fans and once with an eighteen wheeler. To me, Gallup NM is the center of the Bermuda Triangle of the Southwest. I don't go there if I can help it. I'm glad your story was a more happy one.

New Mexico as a whole is probably no better or worse than Nebraska. They both have their goods and bads, so in some ways either could be better or worse than the other. But Gallup (Tiny lived there for a while, he calls it "ga-loop") is a special case all its own. I don't know of any place in Nebraska that's as desolate or unlucky. If I ever have to cross NM again, I'll somehow avoid Gallup. BW

Been to Gallop myself. Noisey trains all night near the motel. Good place to be from.

As a child while watching Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, The Rifleman, Branded and of course Bonanza and Gunsmoke I longed to see some of the 'Old West' and was so excited to finally see some of this scenery.
Another memory was as a small child I would often sit around the old Silvertone black and white console TV (you never heard of people breaking in and stealing those) with my Dad and watch the evening news and hear of these far off places I longed to see. One mystery I kept hearing time and time again on the news was about the Gallup Poles....I could never figure why they were so newsworthy.... Imagine our dismay when on our first trip to Gallup we discovered rows and rows of these remnants of my childhood memories..... |

I love NM. I have two sister-in-laws in Albuquerque, so we end up out there often. One of my favorite trips was ice fishing in Eagle's Nest. It was sunny, warm, no snow, 7 inches of ice, and we caught our limit of lake trout. We stayed at the only hotel in town. It had 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. My brother-in-law cooked up the fish we caught that evening. Best fish I've ever had. There's also great hiking in the Sandias. Someday I'd like to get out there with the Willys. I made a note on the bucket list - Presidential Suite - El Rancho!

It was cheaper than the (normal) Comfort Inn room we stayed in the night before which had a little influence over the decision. |

I’ve stayed at the El Rancho several times, last time was back in June. My daughter lives in Phoenix and I always manage to make that one of my stops. I’m a big Route 66 buff, so that place is a must-see.

Now I have the song "Route 66" stuck in my head. Good thing I like that song.
