I see that the original buckshot mudders are available again. Do yall think these would fit on a stock wheel? They are listed as 32x8.50x16. Would they be soft enough for the trails or good for only mud?

Yes they would fit on a 4.5 x 16 rim. Are they 6 ply or 8 ply? They would wear better on a 5.5 or 6" rim in my opinion. Several owners have 7.50s on their jeeps. Maybe they will chime in here.

As you know the standard tire for a 4.5” wide Jeep wheel has always been 6.00 section width.
When the 1947 Willys PU came along they wanted a larger tire. They decided on 7.00 section width tires and the early standard PU wheel was 5” wide. The M38 followed suit increasing the standard military tire from 6.00 to 7.00 section width. And yes they used the exact same wheel as was standard on early Willys PU trucks. In the early 1960’s the standard Willys PU tire size was increased to 7.50 section width. With that the standard PU wheel was increased to be 6” wide. So there you have it. As the tire section width increases so does the rim width. The real reason being the tire pressure and it’s effect on the tread crown. Myself I actually prefer my rims to be a tad narrow compared to standard by 1/2” to 1”. My reasoning is that increased tire section width better protects the outermost edge of the wheels rim section. But this practice only benefits when used off road and not on road. Whenever increasing the tires size, the tires become too large for the light payload. For that reason tire pressures must be reduced so the the tread crown can flatten out to run at full contact patch. A narrow rim also bulges the the tread crown which requires one to reduce the PSI even further, This is very good for off-road use but not desirable when on road because low psi increases roll resistance and lowers efficiency.

Ken is correct, and the P78 is the equivalent of a 33-10.50, so I would use a rim no narrower than 7.0 inches. (9.0 is recommended).

I have 32-11.50-15s on my jackman 8" rims. I do love the bite of the buckshots on a muddy road!

I cant seem to find a solid answer on the size of these. Some sites list them as 32x8.50 which is similar to a 7.50x16. Others list it as a 32x10.50. That will definatly not work.

I bought a set of P78-15 Buckshots some time ago, and they were an honest 33 inches tall brand new. These were the radial version so that may be a little different. They were an awesome tire and were amazing in the mud! They were mounted on a stock Ford PU wheel about 6" in width- the the truck did sway on the tall sidewalls a bit.

If the 78% aspect ratio in the P78-16 means what it's supposed to mean, the sidewall is 78% as tall as the tire is wide. If it's a 32" OD on a 16" rim, the sidewall is (32-16)/2 = 8". 8 is 78% of 10.25. Take that for what it's worth given the "if"s involved

I have q78-15's on my 3B. They measure 35.5" tall and tread width is ~9.5" give or take. Imo they are pretty good in mud but that's it.

I will post measurements again when I get them mounted on the other jeeps wheels. Here is a side by side comparison with 6.50x16 STA super traxions.

Got them mounted today. I put them on my other jeep to see what they look like. Right now they have 30 lbs of air. Will have to air down to get the tread flat. I feel like my front springs have sagged quite a bit over the last few years. They are Crown replacements. I think on my trail jeep I will go with the USA replacements from Walcks and some 3/4"-1" shackles. There are 1/4" wheel spacers on my 48. Might go just a bit wider to gain some turning radius. They clear right now at full lock but just barely. Backs would likely rub the wheel wells pretty good as well. I think they look good.
