I like these monthly posts and didn't see one this month, so I thought I would get it going as November was pretty good to old Chigger.

Levelled out the lean with an 1 1/38" spacer block. New steering wheel, new horn & wiring, and new seat covers with new pans. I overstuffed them with recycled foam from the cushions of a commercial duty couch. They're so comfy, I shoulld have done that months ago.

oldscot3 -- Looks nice and comfy.

What did I do to "The Swiss Miss", our 1948 CJ2A jeep? Explored and cleaned and wiped. Oiled a few things and made pads for the back. Also made fender pads to protect the fenders while I bend over looking at the engine. Planning to cut some pads for the foot areas. I'm cutting old used GI (olive drab) sleeping pads, about 1/4" thick. Also grabbed some AC rubber tubing and made a pad for between the right seat and the tub.
Also asked a few question, sent emails and ordered parts. Read a lot of manuals and old Military Vehicles magazines. Reviewed this great forum and also the G503 forum, looking for more information.
Planning to lub the jeep later today. Hope to find all 24 zerks to lub. Then wait for time out of parts package (stupid c19) then do some minor stuff.

Stay Safe

I installed a Saturn Overdrive Assembly. I watched a video 3 times and read the instructions as many times, just so I knew exactly what needed to be done. I've had the OD for 6 months and I just couldn't get the courage to install it. I think the snap ring to hold the lockwasher in place held me back. Did a couple of dry runs with the lockwasher, while the OD was not yet installed, to make sure it was installed correctly. Glad I did, otherwise, I would have never gotten it right! Once installed, my wife, helped me thread the shift rod. Could never have done it myself! Getting it on the road, I must say, it's a smooth operation. It used to be a chore getting up to 35 mph, in 3rd. Now, I can easily hit 40 mph and keep up with traffic and not have someone tailgating me. I could probably get to 45 and maybe 50, but haven't had the opportunity yet.

It's been a crazy November, come to think of it, October too. Nearly zero Jeep time.

But today I broke that cycle. Started some body work on the tub. Mounted the V6 badges I picked up last month. And lastly, found a way to modify a steering shaft so I could use a stock wheel on a quick disconnect steering column.

Radiator arrived. Sending it back. It won't work. Little frustrated on that one.

But it's good to be back to tinkering!

Over the long holiday weekend I cleaned out a dana 44 that I had lucked into and got the case scaled, phosphated and painted.  Also got the Power-Lok I purchased on the forum cleaned out and re-assembled with a new friction plate pack. Only took three times pulling it apart and torquing it back together. I think I have it down nowLOL

During November I replaced the front axle assembly with a NOS military surplus M38A1 axle. Since the axle had been in storage since I was a kid and the pinion felt a little rough, I pulled the differential, replaced the pinion bearings and inner seals, pulled the front hubs repacked the bearings and replaced the seals and also installed 11" brakes. I cleaned out the rear axle assembly, replaced the bearings, seals, hubs and brakes, and replaced all brake lines and master cylinder.

Mixed some "knuckle pudding" using Valvoline 85-140 blended with chassis grease, and used a suction pump grease gun to pump it into the knuckles.

Yesterday I put new oil in the axles, transmission, and transfer case. I made my own pressure bleeder from a $9 garden sprayer from Lowes and a military surplus bleeder cap. I used that to bleed the brakes, and it was the easiest way to bleed brakes I ever tried. Still need a little adjustment on the back brakes, but I got good pedal.

After all that my knees hurt too much to want to crawl back under to adjust the brakes, so I did some work topside. I replaced the carburetor with a freshly rebuilt Carter WO, rewired the headlights, and ordered a new set of choke / throttle cables to replace the lawnmower cable currently installed for the choke. The old carburetor leaked air around the throttle shaft, so it runs a lot better now, and all the lights work.

Next up will be to finish the brake job by adjusting the rears, and then start on the rest of the wiring which is a rat nest of a mess right now.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

With a properly tuned carb and the ignition timing set right on a reasonably good engine it should be able to go much faster than 40 without overdrive.  Sounds like it might need some TLC (tuning, lubing, cleaning).

Ninja'ed by OnlyOneDR.

Seriously, that Willys should do 45-50 MPH with out OD, 55-60 with OD. Heck, that close to sea level it may do more.

My Saturn OD is out for delivery today.  Got a killer deal from Walck's Black Friday deal, plus some gift certificates I was saving... close to $400 off!  Why was the snap ring so hard to get installed?  Appears to just take some patience to get right, but were there any tricks to it?  The only thing I am worried about is getting the nut on the unit torqued to 120 ft/lbs while the unit is sitting on my bench... still weighing options on that procedure.

Morning Cube Tube...glad you got a killer deal on the OD. Actually, the snap ring went in easier than I thought it would, especially, when laying on my back underneath the jeep, with my neck and back contorted to see if the snap ring was installed correctly. AND getting enough light in that small area. Plus, at my age, the eyes aren't focused as well at close quarters as they used to be. If I didn't take the time to practice, making sure the lockwasher was placed correctly, the snap ring install, would have driven up a wall. As for torqueing the nut, here's a youtube video, by metalshaper, and what he did to torque the nut, with the transfer case on the bench. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpG9FHRoLIM. Good luck!Smile
