I'm replacing the manifold on my '46 CJ2a as well as replacing some of the missing studs. The original nuts seem to be brass, and I can't find similar replacements. Is there any reason regular nuts can't be used here with suitable torque and a dab of anti-seize compound?

Thanks for the info. I didn't think of NAPA for nuts, but I'll stop by.

What is the reason for using brass nuts?

They don’t rust and stick to the stud, Tom.

I like to use brass nuts on the exhaust pipe flange for the same reason, they don't rust and stick as bad.
I have used steel nuts on the manifold studs with anti seize compound but only when I didn't have brass. I prefer using brass with anti seize. If a brass nut does seize on a steel stud the brass nut will usually still come off without enough force to break a stud.

I found it hard to find those brass self-locking nuts at my local hardware stores. I believe the size is 3/8-24. Not cheap, but discovered that BMJP and MWM stock them. If it helps, here's a photo of some: Good luck!

And if you don't look close at these being cad-plated steel (using a little anti-seize), they're pretty good substitutes at a much better price. I use the brass nuts on the manifold studs, and steel on the rest of the exhaust system. Good luck! |

Brass seems to be the way to go. Dropped into NAPA yesterday and they got some for me. Farm store only had 3/8"-16.

If you live in a communist state, and you're still locked down, boltdepot.com has them for a decent price (plus shipping).

Can you give the boltdepot part number? I searched their site up and down for 3/8-24 brass self-locking nuts with no joy. They seem to have plenty of regular brass nuts.

If you can't find self locking, regular brass nuts can still work with split lock washers.
