i am back to looking for another 16x4.5 wheel that does not need work. it can have surface rust. the one i took in to get powder coated was rejected. i will have to look into specifically why, but i am on the prowl for a replacement.
as stated in this thread, i am willing to travel in the northeast to pick up.
i REALLY want to get these tractor tires on ASAP. |

i eventually got the 16's i wanted. tractor tires mounted and in use.
i am putting 15 inch rims on my other jeep and came across these 15 inch Kelsey-Hayes (marked K-H) rims. this has different inner wheel (disc) portion. was this a later wheel? stock for a different vehicle? Edited by bight - 19 Aug. 2022 at 2:32pm |

The KH wheels consists of two main parts.
The rim and the disc. The wheel shown has a later style “creased” disc. All KH wheels went to creased discs sometime shortly after 1955. What is the rim width of this wheel ? Know that rim widths changed in later years when alpha numberic tires became available.

Ken,
If there is a part number for the wheel assy, or disc for the "creased disc" wheel, send it along and I will try to get dates. I'm familiar with wheel offset, and that offset being positive or negative, but I'm not familiar with Inset. To me, Inset would be positive offset. In one of the diagrams on page 2 of this thread, the diagram on the right front has the dimension from the inside edge of the rim, to the back of the mounting flange on the disc as "inset". I've always seen that as "backspace". As usual, I may be wrong, but I'm just sharing.

Joe,
backspace was mentioned on page 1. "Backspace = The distance from back of the wheel to the wheel's mounting space, in inches." (pulled from the innerweb) i think Ken is referring to backspace as the "inset" of the wheel or how far it is inset. hopefully he can verify.

I know you understand much of this but I am clarifying for those that don’t.
Concerning disc’s I use three terms centerline, inset or outset. CENTRLINE simply implies the that wheel mounting surface (wms) is at the center of the rim. INSET implies the rim to be inward from centerline. OUTSET implies the rim to be outward from centerline. Most all KH CJ and other Jeep wheels with a few exceptions have exactly 3/4” of inset. So changing around various sizes of KH wheels with a few exceptions has no influence upon the vehicles track width. Two notable exceptions to 3/4” standard inset are the 1969-1971 8”x15” KH wheels used on 442, Renegade I and Renegade II. Those wheels have much more outset from the standard 3/4”. I forget how much without measuring or finding my notes. Another example are the Gladiator truck wheels first used in 1962. Those 16” KH wheels have a lot of inset. Later when able I’ll see what I can dig up on various wheel part numbers to shed light on exact date for various changes.

While we are on the topic I will mention there is much more to know about KH wheels than one might expect.
Various wheels used various gauges of steel when formed to shape. The rim may or may not be of the same gauge as the disk. This greatly effects the weight of the wheel itself. It also greatly effects the heavy duty ness of the wheel. You will often see typical standard KH 4-1/2”x 16” wheels that have notable runout. (bent) Where as heavy duty 5x16” M38 wheels are seldom found to have significant runout or bent rim flanges. Edited by oldtime - 19 Aug. 2022 at 3:33pm |

I ran across this write up on the M38/M38A1 Wheels and thought it would be appropriate info to add into this older thread discussion: http://willysmjeeps.com/downloads/M38JeepRim.4.pdf
