update to previous post.

What I've discovered is that my wire connection between the amp gauge and the alternator was loose. I think the way i put the two wires on the post was the issue. It is a walcks harness and has a decently thick shrink tube.
My theory is the shrink tube kept me from getting a solid firm connection, one that felt good and tight on install but putting a few miles of vibration through it could have shaken it just loose enough to no get good contact. This week, my weekend, I want to put a few miles on it and see if i really solved the issue or just part of it.

First and foremost, Happy Easter!

Last night I took my jeep into work, all well and good. After I got in the forecast had changed from no rain to heavy rain... Great. So I walk out put the bikini top up and walk back to work. It's weathered a few good rain storms without the top for sure.
I head out at midnight to spend Easter with the family and I stop for gas before I get home and this is where the issue started. Step on the starter, key on, and I get maybe a half turn and then nothing. My fuel gauge zeroes put every time I step on the starter button. My thought is maybe some water got into it some how. I don't dwell on it much, grab the crank and start it up and start heading home. All the while my headlights while dim compared to modern cars seem unnaturally dimmer. 3ish miles from home the engine starts spitting on every cylinder and losing power. I kill the lights and the engine has restored power and I putz on home, in total darkness, not the best thing in the world but at least it was back roads and I could go slow.
Getting into the garage I hook the battery up to the charger and it is showing only half capacity. I'm thinking my alternator failed me at some point and the battery did the heavy lifting getting me home, but I think it was at wits end just as I was getting home. They are both new, battery and alternator, thhe battery is only a few months old. I'll look into it more later. Gotta get some kip and family time.

Yep, that’s the rear, alright. I’d bet I have an extra. I’ll have to look.

Paul,

I looked through my junk yesterday, but did not find a transfer case with a usable output shaft. Sorry.

I would check with Sal Walker at Vintage Jeeper, he probably has what you want.

I have a few old transfer cases lying around, so may have a good output shaft, if you want a used one.

Anyone have the parts numbers for quality d18 bearings. I'd prefer timkens but Japanese bearing would be fine too. Last one I got from quarter ton was a Chinese made bearing and I don't want to run that in the case, I just don't have faith in it

Went to work on my d18 today, unfortunately progress has been slow and now it's even slower. The threads on my output shaft are pretty much buggered up beyond recovery, so I'll have to source a new one...

Got a new peice of literature and found this chart towards the back. I don't recall seeing it before so it's pretty neat!

Snow Day! My wife, son and me took a little cruise around the block. I then went out for some pictures, and I might go out for more. First good snow we have had in a while and my flanges did the trick. Last time I was in four wheel drive where it was actually needed was 2 years ago in the snow we had, and those hubs froze in the disengaged position.

I hadn't heard that. And this one is the biggest one I think we've had, close to ten feet.

Nice!  Looks like a big one!  Heard there’s a Christmas tree shortage this year? Anyone else hear that?

Got my tree yesterday, and had it not been as muddy I would have taken the truck but it certainly made a good pictureLOL

My battery finally went out on me today, it's been coming, but it got me at work, I went to leave and the temp was about 32 degrees at 6 in the morning, and she was not wanting to even turn over. A friend tried to help me jump but it still wasn't enough juice go motivate the battery, especially at the current temperature. I think while this happened I flooded the engine out. We got a new battery, and started cranking right good but was hitting and mssing some, white smoke. We pulled a couple plugs and sure enough, soaking wet, steel of gas, so we dry it off, crank the engine over to blow out some of the accumulated fuel. Put the plugs in and she started right up and got me home no issue. No issue starting later today either. Wasn't planning on my morning being that way but it was a good learning moment for me, trouble shooting with only a handful of tools.

Edit in.

I always forget too, that my jeep actually starts really well in the cold, at least down to about 10 degrees is the coldest I remembered starting it in, but it doesn't need a whole lot of fuel or choke in cold temps. I forget and then that's how I get into the situation I got into today.
