It is running rich. Way too rich.
Time to put this to bed. Send the carb to Scoutpilot. Are you sure about the output of the coil? A weak coil can sometimes cause a spark plug to appear as running rich because of incomplete combustion. |

I'm not sure if you remember but I originally had a 6v coil with a resistor and now it is a 12v didnt really change anything about it

I hope that the 12 volt coil that you installed doesn't have a internal resistor. That coupled with an external resistor could cause problems.

I removed the external one
But I do think that I will be sending my carb to scout; at the very least I can rule that problem out and focus on the other side of the issue being electrical Edited by General Eisenhower - 27 Nov. 2021 at 1:32pm |

So went through and retires the engine and from what I know, I think I did it right
I cant get it to turn over because the starter button is fried so I have a new one coming to my napa hopefully that helps, it's been on it's way out for a while. I have a hand crank but I can only get it to fire with a spray of starter fluid into the carb I went and verified the float adjustment, pump travel as close as I can get to 17/64ths with a tape measure, and meter rod adjustment Still no luck. I'll be looking to send out the dizzy for a rebuild and contacting scout tomorrow for a carb rebuild as well.

Hey GE. Go get an engineers scale (ruler) that has 64ths on it and drop the tape measure. Or measure something you can make a tool out of that you can be more exact on the length and use it. You might find that your tape is not accurate enough. (Or send to scoutpilot). You can also find the tool on eBay for about $24 and use it
Just my 2 cents Bitz

So recently I have begun to have cold starting issues, however I've remembered that this is the first winter with the mechanical fuel pump, I've only had it since summer. I've seen about 3 or so slow pumps to get it started, any other helpful tips?

Because the carb isn’t sealed, the gas sometimes evaporates from the bowl after sitting a day or two and causes that to happen. Leaking check valves in the fuel pump can worsen the problem.
If you haven’t gotten the running issues worked out yet I wouldn’t get concerned, the starting problem may improve when you get the other issue fixed. |

I'm not particularly worried, the issue never occurred until it got cold and then I realized that my fuel pump was a summer install so that could explain why ita now showing up

I should add, that since I've only had the mechanical fuel pump on hot days so far, it might just be the nature of the beast, and from reading it seems I'm not having a hard start, I'm just not starting it right. Sounds like plenty of other people with stock setups have the same thing
I'll try later today with 3 or 4 slow pumps of fuel and see if that does better, I was giving it 2 or 3 quick pumps....

You probably need to choke it when it’s cold, a rich mixture is easier to fire and burns better when cold. However, if you have to choke it to make it run normally, the choke may not do you any good now.

I've had on occasion a backfire when trying to start it and when I give it a push of gas right when it starts up, just as the starter let's off, and then dies
Addon, I did try priming the carb with 3 or 4 slow pumps and that did help fire it off immediately it ran for a little but died, I do think the choke is at the root of why it wont stay running the first few cranks Edited by General Eisenhower - 07 Dec. 2021 at 8:54pm |

Ok so today I played around with it some, and I figure out with winter weather about 3 or 4 slow pumps on the gas is rnought to get it going with the choke out, then push the choke in just a tad when it warms up but not too much or it dies.
I have a high idle of 1100 right now, it I play with the accelerator screw it dies I let it warm up and when I shut down I noticed in the carb throat being contained by the choke valve was white smoke, it was more dense than what is in the picture but that's it after sitting for 5 minutes. Is it normal? Or is it just cause by the choke being closed? |

It very well could be, after shutdown and with the choke closed it makes sense that it would linger for a while,
I suppose on an open choke it would be noticed

So now my dwell and tach are almost spot on, the jeep went for a little drive around the development and it just felt dogged down the whole time, even in 2nd gear I couldn't get it up to 20mph
It still likes the choke just cracked open, bo more no less It did idle without the choke tho Edited by General Eisenhower - 13 Dec. 2021 at 2:51pm |
