Finally got the new shakles on today. I was having an issue getting the poly bushing installed properly.
What I ended up doing was popping them in the freezer for about 15 minutes, and they shrunk just enough to tap them in. All in all tr hardest part was removing the old shakles. 3 of the 4 were correct, there was one that was the wrong thread for the side and it cost me a ratchet, fortunately that ha a warranty. Below will be the picture of the jeep before and after and one picture will be it loaded with about 1500 pounds of concrete and wood (part of that 1500 includes people weight for the trip back from lowes) Before (this picture is a little older) After Loaded |

I have no idea why that first picture is upside down...
I want to add, I've never loaded the jeep like that before, nor do I plan to again. It did really well with the weight for the short journey though and it was a good way to break in the new shackles!

Oh yeah. A quarter-ton truck with a three-quarter ton load is a great test!

It certainly shows that the max capacity in the manuel being 800 pounds is perfectly fine.
The concrete was 900 pounds by itself but I added two adults weight being about 190 each and 100 pounds for wood. It wasnt bottomed out on the rubber bumpers either. We are building a deck and I didnt want concrete dust in either of our everyday vehicles, this one is safer for our lungs. Certainly interesting experience similar to what my great grandfather had about 70 years ago

Hoo, boy, your jeep's front end looks "light" with that load. How did the steering feel?

You could definitely feel it floating a little bit, even in a straight line it was noticable. I never did get over 15 however. It didnt bother me none, but I'd like to not do that again lol, I dont need to go looking for trouble, I'm pretty sure it knows my address.

Is there any arch left in those springs now?

Yes there is indeed, the rears have a good arch still. Now what I really wonder about are the couple year old crown springs that are already going flat in the front.
I have a pair I'm getting sand blasted for the front, and I think I want my rears to get rearched anyway, they seem to be original springs from what I can tell Happy Fourth of July by the way

I am rebuilding my shift tower and I am stuck on reassembly. I have referred to the manuel but I didn't see hardly anything referring to the tower nor did I find what in stuck on, on the site.
I'm stuck trying to get the spring that holds the shift cane in place, back behind the tabs its rests on.bit was a booger to get off but the method won't work for assembly. For those curious, the old tower had the pivot pin for the cane come loose, I think it was like that when I got it, nevertheless less it kept binding slightly on me

I did finally get it put back together and back on, and it shifts better. The guts are all the same. The poppet balls weren't worn at all. One shift rail had a little pitting but not in a spot that slides into the casting.
To install the spring I ended up using a cleaning rod for a 50 cal, it was big enough to sit on the spring but not to big to be in the way. I also changed my tranny fluid since I was there and it was looking a little brown. I'd post pictures but I got a new phone and now it's saying it's not the right file type, but my files have always been .jpg, but it doesn't take them now

Got the first flat tire I've had on it, and while i was replacing the tube I noticed the tires are of 2010 manufacture! They looked brand new when I got them with the little mold bits and all. So it looks like I should start to look for new ones!

I'm gonna try tomorrow, yet again to see if I can find the source of why I need choke to run, so I'll try spraying all around the intake with starting fluid. It's certainly a real head scratcher as to why...
Anyway here is a short video of my jeep on a little drive through the trees, it sounds good even with a little choke on. I should add, sounds as good as an l134 usually sounds on camera, and that usually sounds like it's gonna blow up Edited by General Eisenhower - 24 July 2022 at 6:11pm |

With a little help, I've finally got my jeep almost dialed in to idle without choke and at the right rpm
I'm idling at just about 650 and it doesn't need choke once warm. I'll play with it a little more because a small amount of choke and it idles smoother. But we are getting there!

I've been working on getting the valves out of my parts engine and all but two are stuck. The very first and last have been removed but the rest are stuck in place. Keepers are removed and springs are loose but some of the valves are rusted to the engine deck and I imagine the ones that are raised are seized in the stem. I have been soaking in PB for a long while now, but not making progress

Got the last bumper bolt in partially. I busted my thumb pretty good so I took a break from that and built this ammo crate from scrap wood. I'm pretty happy with how it looks.
I gotta pick up some latches and a strap for the lid, if I can figure out a stencil I'll do that too Edited by General Eisenhower - 01 Sep. 2022 at 3:05pm |
