Probably a pipe plug. We won't know what size until you get the steel line and the brass 45* fitting off.

I was just asking material wise, if it mattered. But we shall see tomorrow, as long as it nice out.
It's always fun to take the unnecessary crap out of the engine bay, helps simplify things

As with your local salvage yard, you should know your hardware store. i used to stop there 2 or 3 times a week for a work item. The clerk woud stand, look at me asking what I needed, "Oh, you know this place as well as I do".

Hoping for help
Installed a 180 degree thermostat today, within 5 minutes of idling it got up to 200 and was spewing coolant out of the vent tube so I shut it off Before the temperature read around 130, so i figured I'd replace the thermostat, now it wants to overheat immediately

I don’t know if this is the issue but did you drill a 1/8 hole in the thermostat for air to escape?

DONT take it out just to drill a hole in it. Once it opens the air will be released and it should be fine. Most modern thermostats have an air bleed built in anyway. Some think this hole is a cure-all for every cooling system problem, but it’s really only a one-time thing.
Did you fill the radiator clear full? That’s too much, and the system will expel the excess until it gets to the level it likes. Just above the cooling tubes when cool is enough, half full in the top tank is plenty, maybe still a bit too much. My CJ2-A always goes to 200+ after start-up, but then it cools down and settles into a proper routine. BW

If it drives fine tomorrow, I'll regain my trust for it, but until then I'm squinting my eyes at it.

Again I don’t have nearly as much experience as others including Bruce W but I have heard in multiple threads that for the new commonly available thermostats that it was a good idea to drill a 1/8 inch hole so I did and have had no trouble at all. I have a 175 degree thermostat and run at 180 when warmed up year round. Again as others say “your mileage may vary” and I don’t have any idea if that would resolve your issue.

It should be about 60 degrees when I get home tonight and I'll take her on a a few mile drive and see how she handles
I believe I put in a 160 degree thermostat (I forget) but at idle it gets to about 150 and then drops off to around 135 and then cycles again, so again I'll actually run it down the road and see how she does this time

That sounds like something is wrong with thermostat or the installation. Temp should stay around 160 at lowest once it gets up to temp. You did use the thermostat housing retainer?

Yea I did use that, and the installation was easy and simple, as well as I did put it in correctly, I did check.
Does the thermostat start to open before 160 by any chance? Edited by General Eisenhower - 23 Mar. 2021 at 3:02pm |

Did you install a 180 or a 160 thermostat? Above you say you installed a 180 and below a 160
