Many years ago, watching crime-scene TV shows, I used to wonder why they were using flashlights, even if the room lighting seemed decent.
Then one day I tried it, when I could not find something. Using a bright narrow-focus flashlight -> I found it quickly. This was after wasting a bunch of time looking for it, without this "focuser" . Long story short today, I accidentally scattered a bunch of parts in garage. I found everything but a special left-hand locking nut. I looked all over. Then got out my trusty Ridgid 12v flashlight with narrow beam, and found the nut in less than 30 secs . . up under a tool box (in the shade of shop lights, and 10ft away from where I hit it) Over the years, if I can't find something, I get out the flashlight. It works if the item is in shade, or if in plain sight, but you missed it (the narrow beam focuses your attention). This is not limited to Jeep parts, or even in the garage. I can't count the times I have found my wallet, keys, etc, etc. in places I would not have expected |

I lose things a lot, so need all the help I can get. To reinforce the opening post -> for me, the key is a narrow beam. I measured my favorite "finder" flashlight, and it produces a bright 9" diameter spot . . . from 6 feet away. Small enough to keep my attention in that spot.

Yep, sometimes things are in plain sight, but hard to see.
You might be looking right at it, but only notice the shadow it casts.

I easily remember one time when I lost my flashlight outdoors in broad daylight. I had just used the light a half hour or so ago but could not find it. I looked for it for two hours straight, retracing my steps. I eventually went back to work on my 1948 cj2a and there I found it on the top of my ragtop just above the rear window and just above my level of sight.
Another great trick when looking for small items on a floor with flashlight is to get your eyes down low so you can shine the beam across the floor and see everything from ground level.

These new LED flashlights also create contrast which helps.

By the time I find the flashlight, then find some batteries and put them in, I’ve forgotten what I was looking for.

Well I'm glad you had luck finding your lost item. For me, I almost always give up and buy another. That's the ticket for then finding the lost item while cleaning up when the job is done.
Ball bearings, nuts, springs, special one off items, it happens frequently for me. A work bench full of open cans is suicide. A clean room for disassembly, all painted white with no cracks or drains in the floor, is the place to do it. Don't you love it when you hear it, but don't see it? Murphy's Law says all items that fly under things always go clear to the wall , as far under as possible. Or roll half way across the shop. I've spent many more hours looking than fixing. Oilly
