CJ2Aers; I posted a while back about replacing 3 new fuel pumps with dismal results. The other day I called another parts distributer ,Ron Fitzpatrick, and whined to him about my pump dilemma. He thought it highly unlikely that I would get 3 bad ones. He suggested I check the cam lobe for wear which I did. It was as smooth as a baby's bottom, no groove. So I ordered a pump from him, thinking I never learn. I got the pump today along with a very nice catalogue and a piece of candy. Like a candy was going to make installing it better ! But I installed the pump, gave the manual pump several pumps and turned the key. It started right up and ran perfect. Am I happy or what. Thanks for everyone's advice and Fitzpatricks Jeep Parts. RFJP is one of the better suppliers, so far everything I have gotten from there has been top quality.
Not sure where he sources the fuel pumps he has.
I put a reproduction fuel pump on my CJ2A, it was not from RFJP but another reputable supplier. That worked fine for about a year, but it is now leaking a little and everything is tight. I suspect the diaphragm and gasket were rubber made from some ancient Chinese formula that has now been dissolved by the fuel. I bought a quality rebuild kit for one of the original AC pumps I have and will use that rather than risk another foreign made reproduction pump. |

If one of you has one of the newer “split-bowl” pumps that’s no good, I’d be willing to pay the postage to my house to get one of those to look over. I’d like to see how they’re expected to work in the first place. BW

Where did you get your rebuild kit. I'd like to rebuild my old AC pump as I've been having constant issues with my new pump also. And how do you know it's a quality kit?

I got it from Classic Military Vehicles. Bruce, That pump is one of the split bowl reproduction pumps. I will gladly send that POS to you once I have rebuilt one of the AC pumps I have for the Jeep. May be a while as I am sort of deep into getting a CJ5 into road worthy shape, but I will get back to the CJ2A once I get brakes working on the 5. These pumps work, but the check valves don't hold, and now it is leaking around the bowl and the flange, even though I have tightened the P!$$ out of them. I suspect the materials of the bowl gasket, and diaphragm are just not holding up. The divided bowl does have a screen in the center. The pump worked fine for most of a year, then started leaking.

The best thing I've done for my fuel pump, and carb, and tank, etc. is only run ethanol free gas. In a pinch I'll put 10% pump regular in, but so far I've only had to do that once when I was on a longer drive and burned nearly the whole tank anyway. In my area it's a little hard to find and cost more, but so worth it.
I also run it in my power equipment even though most of my tools are new enough to tolerate some ethanol. As most here probably know, it's the sitting around parked with ethanol eating at hoses, seals, o-rings and gaskets that causes the trouble.

Using 100% gas will make a big difference. (jeeps and lawn mower) only use ethanol in my daily driven stuff.

At altitude ethanol gas tends to vapor lock easier. I only use ethanol free gas in Ol' Red and have never vapor locked even above 10,000 feet. Of course altitude isn't a problem in southeast Kansas at 850 feet, give or take 100 feet or so but who needs ethanol in their gas with old equipment that wasn't designed for it. At 93 octane it is more expensive, but the old girl deserves the best anyway.

Lucky for me around here just about every gas station has ethanol free gasoline. It is because this area has a lot of lakes, and gasoline with alcohol mixed in is a big problem for 2 cycle boat motors.
I only use 100% gasoline in all of my farm equipment, lawn mowers, generators, log splitters and old vehicles not designed for it especially my Jeeps and old tractors. Even with modern equipment if it may sit unused for a while the E-gas is junk because it does not hold up well in storage.
