Ok this was totally scary to achieve and I am not looking forward to undoing it. ESPECIALLY if I have to do it again. COST was stupid even using the crappiest Home Depot 2x4's stuff I wouldn't use to build a chicken coup. 14) 2x4's 8tft long = $115 which while stupid expensive for 2x4's in a part of the world where Log trucks have been running 6 days a week from 3:30Am to 5pm almost bumper to bumper trying to harvest all the burnt timber in Santiam and North Fork canyons where we have been cleaning up burnt out homes and shops for FEMA. Oh add $16.00 in 3" screws as well. I luckily had the 4X4 and 3/4" particle board I used as a platform for the jack. It is stable passes the rock test which is saying something as uneven as my shop floor is. a close up If I were to do this again I would have made the crib 16" x 16" rather then the 12" x 16" it would have had just a little more foot print. Now to figure out the Brake line leaks and rerouting them. The Transfer Case Leaks the fuel leak and what ever else I find while I am under there. I now see the advantage to driving around a chassis for a little while as the Brake and Gear box leaks would have shown up then and been much easier to deal with. PITA

I guess I'm confused as usual. What is the purpose --- that jack stands won't do? |

Jack stands that would have raised the Jeep 15" would have had to have had a total height of 25" as the axle sits 10" off the floor. Or I would have had to stack something under the Jack stands to achieve the height. The stands I have will only safely support to 17" which means I would have had to put 8" of something under them. They also would have been much closer together so not any where near as stable. Stands tall enough to have used only stands would have been MUCH more expensive then the wood.

With the rebar and wire mesh in the 5" concrete it would take a spendy concrete saw cut to even start. |

Depends on your 'scroungability'......old school jackstands made from old Ford axle halves used to be seen in every old garage I was ever around. Bigger truck or tractor halves would have a larger footprint. I was saving these and just used them on another project.... for stands you would want to notch them and weld in a strap 'saddle'. I wouldn't make stability claims, you're on your own there....just know that they have been used for years. The cribbing is waaaaay safer I would say but is a more cumbersome method, and cost. Having the tires sit down on them like you did is probably the best form but I can see them get in the way too, so......drawbacks to all. When you are done you can present your wife with four matching flower planters which should score some points! |

I'm planning on making a better platform for the Jack instead of stacking up a bunch of boards as I can see a use for these in the future. The can be stacked up in a corner of the shop somewhere. And wait until I need them again.

I guess I missed the part about why it needs to be so high off the deck?

Cause I am almost 64 years old and trying to R&R an OD, reseal a Transfer case output, and reroute all the in frame brake lines. is not something I can do with the Jeep only a few inches above my Chest. This way I can sit on my butt under it for most of the work which will be so much easier.

57 was a VERY good year! Same as me!
Like you I preferr to be able to sit under the vehicle to work. I didn't have heavy enough jack stands for a 1 ton diesel truck but I do have a sawmill. Sometimes you have to improvise!

Het Barry, that is pretty much what I did with rail road ties.
I recommend screen door handles on the sides to help with moving them.
