    Posted: 18 June 2021 at 11:30am
Hello all,

Long story short, my old radiator was damaged the last time I went to Raush Creek, PA so I swapped in a new Champion 3 core aluminum radiator as a replacement.  Prior to the new radiator, I was running max 180 degrees consistently.  With the new Champion, it's pushing to 220 very quickly and I think it would go higher if I didn't shut the engine down.  All new coolant and the coolant seems to be exchanging fine.  A few observations, this new radiator does not have a shroud and if I had to guess, it does not appear to hold as much coolant.  This is the first aluminum radiator I've used so I'm open to any suggestions.

Champion Radiator CC5241.

Thanks,
Dave L.

Did you drill hole in the thermostat flange?  There could be air trapped in the head.  That would give you a 220 reading - if the coolant is not moving due to some sort of a air pocket.

Stev,  yes, I have the 1/8" hole from the last time I replaced the thermostat. Thanks for the question.  I'm hoping it's an air pocket issue.  I'm going to give it a test again in a few minutes.

You need a shroud. It would appear you are 12 volts so the easiest way to accomplish that is buy a shroud with built in electric fans.

I have the same radiator in my 2a.  I was having the same problem.  I went with an electric fan set up and it helped a little but didn’t take care of the whole problem.
A fan shroud made all the difference!

How many fins per inch is your new radiator?  Even though you have an extra row of tubes, you need the appropriate fins per inch (10-12) or you will run “hot”.  I had a brand new 3 row copper/brass radiator and it always ran hot due to a low fin count.  The fins (and to a degree, the type/size of the tubes) are how you dissipate the heat from the system.  This is very crucial regardless of radiator construction material.  Having a shroud is important also.  Close off the gaps between the radiator and the grill also.  You want all the air going thru the radiator and not out around it.

Dave, that fan is pulling nothing thru the rad.. nothing. I put an alum rad in my 3A salad, its the exact size w/h as an orig. I pulled a shroud from a dead rad and used good ol'JB weld to "weld" it to the alum rad. 3 yrs later JB is still on the job, 160 deg tstat and I never see 180 on the gage. I've got fotos if you wanna see the rad/shroud setup..

If you have some photos, that would be great.

I have the same radiator in my jeep and when the jeep is moving it never gets above 185 with a 185 thermostat. I have my electric fans kick on at 190 and unless the jeep is stationary I never hear the fans come on.

not much to see. the biggest challenge was the curve in the bottom tube (the stock rad bottom tube was straight) interfered w/shroud. Cut off the curved tube and tig'd on a straight one.

the above pics are pre-JB while checking fitment-mockup. The duck tape and cardboard lends a nice touch don't you think?

Thanks for the photos!  Looks like I will need to fabricate a shroud.
