I had been considering putting something like this in behind the seats of a half cab jeep.

No worse than the cab tank in my 1971 Ford F250 4x4. It was right behind your seat back. Gave the truck to my oldest daughter as a wedding present 20 years ago. She learned to drive a four speed stick in that truck and so did her two daughters. Now 220K miles on the truck though not the original motor. Original cost $4850 new in 1971. Wish I had bought 2 and put one in storage.

Yeah our old 1959 Chevy Apache work truck had a huge upright tank behind the full seat back.

Well all-righty then!
What's another 20 gallons in a wreck if you're already fried like a potato?
Gofer it!

I always get a kick out of a statement like this…when coming from someone that lives in a tiny, densely populated state out east. Out here in the west, they post signs along the interstates that warn you how far you will need to travel before you come to any additional services like fuel, food, lodging, etc.  Some of those distances between services can equal the miles it would take to go from one edge of a state, to the other edge of many states back east.  It’s a perception thing.  Until you actually travel out west, you have no concept of how far…far…really is.Wink

c'mon now, fess up. thats an old photo? over-development over the last 20 years has cut those distances way down.

I've lived and traveled all over the USA in my 67 years on the planet. I'm fully aware of the distances involved out west, hence my comment "except maybe some places west of the Mississippi".

Maybe my point is better said by saying that I'm pretty sure the Willys Jeep was never designed or intended as some sort of solo long range touring vehicle. If it was, they did a really bad job.

Make it one if that's what makes you happy. Get yourself a trailer and load it up too. Pack all the gasoline you can carry, along with all the tools and spare parts you might need for a vintage jeep in remote areas.
Save a little room for food, water, shelter, some camping gear and voila! you've got yourself a safari! That's what makes America great!

Good luck!

I always thought signs were for people who don't know where they are. LOL

And Ron that has always been my plan.

And I just checked there is fuel at Riley Oregon about 104 miles from Bend With the closest to Bend heading East outside 6Am to 8pm being in Hines about a mile from downtown Burns so 130+ miles from Bend.

Going South from Riley on Hwy 395 theres fuel at Wagontire but you best bring a suit case of money then nothing to Lakeview so thats also a 84 miles. And again only open during extended business hours.

The trip I have planned out to the Arctic Circle has a section that has no services of any kind for 640 miles. Granted there is another route that has fuel spaced closer but would change almost 1/3 of the whole trip to go that way.

I know for 98% of Willy's Jeep guys this kind of thing will never be a concern BUT LONG trips camping along the way is what I want to do with CHUG once retirement gets here in a couple years.

Heck I am even trying to figure out how to stock up on the prescriptions I take so I can be AWAY longer or not on some schedule based on when I renew a prescription.

Sounds like arrangements for air drops will be needed on this mission. Stern Smile
