Stoddard solvent is my preference as well but I have never seen it for sale anywhere convenient. The cropdusting outfit I worked for ordered 55(?) gallon drums from the bulk oil supplier we got got our aircraft oil from. I really don’t want to buy a 55 gallon drum.

I use 10 gal NAPA Macs #6510 All Parts Washer Solvent in my 20 gal parts washer. Works great for the initial cleaning of any metallic parts, internals, and external cases. It is not low cost.
For delicate parts (like carbs), I follow with a soak and cleaning in carb cleaner.
Many years ago I initially tried the water based purple stuff which IMHO didn’t cut the TOUGH grime and gasket sealer residue usually found on our older projects.
Although if you’re simply cleaning internal parts, water based may work fine for you.

When I owned the tannery back around 2000, Stoddard Solvent and “odorless mineral spirits” were the same product from my supplier in 55 gallon drums. I don’t know if what they’re selling as odorless mineral spirits in the big box stores is still the same stuff, but it might be.

I have used Kerosene, Diesel fuel, and Safety-Kleen in the past. The Saftey-Kleen worked best of these three, but I don't know if you can even still get it.

My old "parts washer" was just an old fashioned was tub with legs.

I bought one of the cheap Harbor Freight parts washer tanks a month ago and some of their "degreaser" which is mixed with water for use in the tank. The stuff works sort of, but not too effectively on greasy dirty car parts. So, I have been looking for a better alternative.

While I am not overly impressed with their degreaser, I have to admit I was surprised at how well the wash tank is built considering it only cost $130.

I read through this discussion this morning, and since I had to go to town for a doctor appointment anyway, I stopped by a TLC and bought some of the PSC1000 mentioned above. Will probably try that this weekend.

So I've been using the Tractor Supply PSC1000 for a while now and I can report that I like it better than kerosene or diesel.  It cuts grease just fine but does not have as strong an odor.  The odor does not linger near as long and is gone after washing my hands.  (I use gloves and an apron but always seem to get some on me.)Confused  So far, nary a complaint from my better half when I go back in the house!

I recently bought some of the solvent from TLC and it does the job.

Been spraying brake clean and carb clean into my parts washer to be economic. LOL, don't do that. It warped and ruined the plastic case of the parts washer pump. Thought I'd share my education. A new pump costs at least half what the parts washer cost. Ouch

I use and like the PSC1000 solvent as well. I also did the modifications of adding a spin-on oil filter, quarter turn drain plug and weather seal around the rim of the tub. In the fall I let the gunk settle to the bottom, drain the solvent back into the containers, replace the filter and clean out the settled residue in the tub. I don't know how much the filter catches, but I figure it can't hurt.

Great Advice!  It got me wondering though - what's the difference between brake clean and carb clean?  I usually buy a bunch of cans of whatever is on sale and use whatever is within reach for general cleaning.  (I only use carb clean on carbs though.)  I have noticed that the non-chlorinated brake cleaner doesn't work as well.  Maybe this should be a new thread?

Easy to figure out. When I first turn my cleaner on it sprays clean fluid because all of the gunk is on the bottom of the tank. Once I get things stirred up the spray gets muddy looking. The fluid shouldn’t look too bad if the filter is catching anything. The filter could also be cut open and inspected. I like the idea.  I may have to give a filter a try on mine.
