The cj2a has a 4.3 v6 in it. Previous owner install. I was having issues with it so started replacing sensors. Everything I did improved its performance. Now it stalls when turning right after the turn. Left hand turn no issue. I only have about two and a half gallons in the tank. Could this be the problem. It has an electric fuel pump. I looked in the tank while idling and noticed an eddy spinning in the gas, I wonder if this passes over the exit orifice to the fuel pump on the tank if that could cause the stall???
Any ideas? Thanks

Where is the pump located? An electric pump should be at the level of the bottom of the tank and as close to the tank as possible. Electric pumps are pushers not suckers. I have mine mounted on the back side of the Riser so the head of the pump where the inlet is is about an inch and a half below the bottom of the tank. Since you can mount an electric pump in any orientation the motor part of my pump is pointed up and hides very nicely behind the Riser. Edited by Mark W. - 09 May 2022 at 8:22pm |

Very nice set up! Mine is on the frame next to the tank. Not as pretty though!

Mark, every time I see pictures of your jeep like that, I expect the parts to be attached to a rocket or jet engine. really good looking stuff

Well thought a full tank of gas may solve the issue. But got down to 5 or 6 gallons it started to die after a right hand turn again. I checked ground wires and wiggled all wires while running , no issues. From what I can see the tank only has one baffle in it to keep the gas from sloshing front to back and none to keep the gas from sloshing left to right....? I wonder of this could be killing it since the exit hole is also off center....and I can also see the eddy or whirlpool from the electric pump even with 8 gallons of gas in it...?
Any Ideas.......cheap gas tank by the po...?

You mentioned the 4.3 but didn’t state what induction system the engine has. You also mentioned an in tank electric pump and sensors, that makes me think fuel injection.
Does the engine have a carb or FI?

Electric fuel pump on the outside, carb TBI. Lots of sensors......did not bargain for that LOL I just looked at it for spot welds on the tank for baffles. Yep left to right. Fuel sending unit on the front side exit whole on the back side. Nothing to keep gas from sloshing cross wise. Wondering if fuel pump has to much suction power...?

A slight stumble after the turn, sometimes it will regain itself, most of the time not. Battery is sound no shifting. I checked it with an ohm meter and the grounds, all good. Started it up and wiggled the wires , nothing, checked vacuum lines ,,,okay. It did it two nights ago and the lights stayed on no dimming. I checked the ground to the fuel pump ..okay. Checked the wires to the fuel pump to see if there were any nicks , none that I could see. Also wondering if something is sliding over the exit whole when gas is low.... Interesting only happens when fuel level is five gallons or less...

That gurgling sound in the overflow when you drain the bathtub? Thats that vortex pulling air down the drain. You’ve got the same thing going on. The pump moves a LOT of fuel, most of it is returned to the tank. That air that is sucked in by the vortex is not very good fuel. OEM systems have a strainer or “sock” on the inlet pipe, maybe that helps break up that vortex.
Some say that if you were South of the equator the vortex would spin the other direction and your problem would be on left-hand turns. BW

OK, you have an in-line pump, I misread.
My jeep has a TBI system using the stock 2a tank and don't experience what you are describing. My system pulls fuel from the tank through the drain port on the bottom of the tank to an in-line pump. The return line drops into the tank from the top. If you put the jeep on a slope where the right side is higher does this still happen? Without seeing what you have, it's hard to try and diagnose.

You may benefit from plumbing in a surge tank between the tank and pump. Then you would have a small reservoir of fuel to pull from during corners and side hills.

If any air gets into the pressurized side of the fuel pump, the pressure will drop below that needed to fire the TBI as the air compresses and the engine dies instantly.
