I just realized that someone has put a steel sleeve into the housing so my new thermostst and retainer don't fit.  Does anyone know why it was previously done before I try to take it off.  Thanks.

Looks like a bubba hack of some sort. Did it have a thermostat in it?

It looks very well done. If Bubba did it, he has talent.
Maybe it's a Canadian thing.
Like the money they call a "Loonie".
It might be rare and valuable.

Bubba removed the thermostat from my first jeep and it got much better in the Tucson summer after I discovered it was missing and installed one.

I wouldn’t think it would require that much talent to slide the right size pipe into a hole. If it’s glued in with bearing mount or JB weld it might take a lot of heat and force to break it loose. If it’s just slid in then I think heating the housing might let it slide out. It would help if only one part was steel. I would probably try cutting it out on the milling machine or just buy a replacement if one could be found.

Finally got the sleeve out by drilling it and pulling it out. First tries to cut it with a reciprocating saw without success.

perhaps a home made sleeve to hold the thermostat up where it is supposed to go?
