Right all Willys pickup wheels were 5” x 16” prior to about 1962.
At that time the standard truck wheels became 6” x 16” and were specifically intended for 7.50 x 16” tires. These are the Kelsey Hayes 873 wheels. 873’s are not the same as then new 1962 Gladiator truck wheels. I recommend 6.00 and 6.50 tires on KH 4-1/2”. 7.00 are ideal on 5” KH wheels and 7.50 are also good. 873 and later 50823 are optimum with 7.50 x16 or modern 235/85R16 tires. I provided more similar info here:

It was a 1950 truck, but who knows if the wheels were original to that truck. They are definitely wider than the KH wheels on my CJ2A, and the M38 wheels I have.

Is this the “tire roll” that you speak of on the 4.5” rims Jeff?

Which begs the question. I assume you guys have onboard air, which is something I want to do with my project.
We used to convert York air conditioner compressors for this, is there something better nowadays?

Yeah, I get it too but not near as much. What is your PSI there? To be clear, I’m not necessarily saying that 6 psi is better than 10 psi. In some cases it’s not. I’m still learning on that. If you got to the 9:50 mark of this video, you will see at least 4 Jeeps all running 750s. Some are siped some are not. Mine are grooved. Wheel width varies from 4.5-6. Not sure what everyone’s tire pressure was. Mine was about 6. I’m pretty sure Ron was at 12. Even though the video does not show all the details, my recollection of the obstacle was that everyone had relatively similar difficulty or succcess running it regardless of air pressure or tire design. My point being that I saw no night and day advantage. Maybe someone else who was there saw it differently. Edited by jpet - 01 July 2022 at 8:07am |

https://superflowair.com/products/mv-50-air-compressor-1 This thing has aired up ALOT of tires over the last 7 seasons. I’m shocked that it still works but it does. That what’s nice about tubeless. Just put a plug in it and go. I carry a tube. I also have spoons and I hot rodded my scissors jack so it can be used as a bead breaker. Edited by jpet - 01 July 2022 at 8:01am |

I'm running 7.50 x 16 NDTs on X98, see 11:14 in the video. I was at about 8psi that day. Those are truck wheels so they are heavy duty, 5" wide, no safety bead, running with inner tubes.
Edit to add.... I am running "narrow track" width. Original early CJs are narrower than that. The tires rub here and there but not real bad. Edited by Bob W - 01 July 2022 at 12:40pm |

Very encouraging to see so many using this size tire, and watching that video is getting me more interested in building the project with more trail capability than I previously planned for it.

If memory serves me correctly I was running about 7 PSI in the picture I posted. |

I also carry the same Superflow compressor Jeff has. I have no complaints about it at all.

I'll try one of the Superflow compressors then. Back in the 80s I had a Jeep with a converted York air conditioner compressor. It worked great but hard to stuff it all under a low hood flat fender, and more modern air conditioner compressors won't work for this.
