this is to establish a thread where tire measurements and what a specific tire looks like on a CJ-2A or CJ-3A can be found. these should be the actual measurements you take from specific tires that are used on your jeep.
height (tall or diameter), tread width, and sidewall to sidewall (StS), at what psi they are inflated to, and what size rim they are on. maybe some would appreciate circumference also? include whether you are using tubes or no tubes. manufacturer name, what size they designate, any other particulars. it may be helpful to some to know whether they are installed on vehicle measurements or not installed on vehicle.
please input your measurements! if you want more info, i can add that to this first post. please also include if the tires rub and where, if you have added spacers (what size) to keep from rubbing, have lift and how much, etc. so others considering a specific tire will know what they might expect. a good photo of the tread and any side by side comparison photos would be nice to include also. side shots of your jeep with the tires on would also be a great resource for those wanting to get the overall look of the tires. maybe if we get enough input we could earn a sticky?

Are many people running tubeless tires on rims that were manufactured before tubeless tires were developed? I'm new to Jeeps but I know people do this with other old cars. It might be nice if people included that information with their tire data.

All KH Jeep wheels are tube design prior to mid 1963.
I run tube or tubeless. Makes little difference to me so long as I get the diameter, width and tread designs I like. Bias tires generally have tougher sidewalls to resist punctures.

Oldtime, I must be misinformed, I thought that they were tube type before 1963 & tubeless type after. I have run tubeless tires on tube type wheels for decades. I have had no issues so far. Of course, YMMV.

oldtime,
the tread pattern on your 2 different size STA Super Traxion's is very different? your 7.5x16 tread design matches my 7.0x15. but the smaller (6.5x16) tire tread does not match. is the smaller one a Super Traxion or different STA model?

Bight,
Yes the first two tires shown in my pic are both STA Super Traxions. And yes they have very different tread patterns. The 7.50 x 16” STA is 3/8” wider tread than your 7.00 x 15”. Also it is about 31” diameter. I did not supply that info because they are not mounted but eventually will get mounted on KH heavy duty 5x16 wheels. I’m sure they will rub springs on a standard CJ with D25/27 front axles. However I will mate them to a CJ with a D30 axle. Depending on your axle shaft allowable steer angle; the maximum tire size that causes no rubbing on a CJ with D25/27 front axle is generally the 7.00 x 16” size. Assuming your wheels have the typical CJ with 3/4” of inset from true centerline. Like I said, I run the STA 6.5O x 16 on a D25 axle with zero rubbing at a full 29* (Rzeppa) steer angle with zero rubbing. My larger tires are all mated to D30 axles. The Gladiator wheels mentioned by Dahdo are inset much further than CJ and Pickup wheels. But I believe he has misidentified his particular 6” wide wheels. True Gladiator wheels are MUCH further inset due to the MUCH wider front axle. I believe those are KH 873’s or the virtually identicle KH 50823. I have lots of KH wheels and wheel specs gleaned from first hand observations. Maybe I have some pics ??? But like I say… ALL 1945-1971 CJ, military and Willys pickup wheels are 3/4” inset with one exception the KH Renegade 8”x15” wheels. Edited by oldtime - 05 Aug. 2022 at 11:07pm |

Thanks for setting me straight--It's quite possible I have the wrong info Oldtime. I found these on CL and they are 16x6 and do have 4.25" backspacing, which I think is about 3/4" more than a standard 4.5x16 right? As to being Gladiator wheels, that's what the seller said and I don't know enough to question it. What are the measurements on the KH 873's you mentioned?
