For paper gaskets this stuff is my go to. Useful as a pipe thread sealant too

Valco HYLOMAR Universal blue gasket sealer is the leading non-setting gasket and sealing compound in use worldwide. It is used by many of the world's major automotive manufacturers and by several Formula 1 teams. It is non-hardening and non-setting, vibration resistant, seals surface imperfections and withstands rapid variations in temperature. Allows metal-to-metal contact and is resistant to combustion products, water, engine coolant, petroleum, lubricating oils, kerosene and fluorocarbon refrigerants. Dresses gaskets, threads and seals gaps up to 0.25mm.

Copper Coat or High-Tack. Just a bit of RTV where the block, plate, cover and pan meet. One of the very few places you’ll see me using any of that.

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

So everyone uses sealer on the engine plate and the timing cover?  I saw a video of a mechanic that seems to not use any sealer on the engine plate.

Obviously "everyone" doesn't use sealers as you found on the video.

You asked what sealers we use, and we told you, but feel free to make your own choice based either on the advice you asked for here or what you can find on YouTube videos. It is your Jeep, you can do whatever you want with it. Experience is the best teacher.

WillyNilly,
Take a look at paragraphs D-78 and D-86 in your copy of the Willys Universal Service Manual.

Using gasket paste is a "belt and suspenders" method that I subscribe to for these parts.

Good luck!

I did see those paragraphs in the service manual but forgot to mention it.  However, it is another reason I was wondering if anyone had ever skipped the sealer on the engine plate.

Why do you suppose they'd do that?

probably because when the grease gets in the gasket, it causes the gasket to swell and seal better. … On some gaskets, such as the transfercase pan gasket, I use sealer on the pan side but no sealer on the case side. I just wipe that side with oil. Can’t say if this is better than sealer as I have no opinion on that, but it works well if you want to be able to remove the pan from time to time for inspection, which I do.

I don't know about swelling a gasket to get it to "seal better".

Could be mistaken (that's why I asked), but thought it was just an old school trick to hold it in position long enough to get the fasteners locked down on it.

I know aircraft mechanics who grease paper gaskets and do it myself now and then. Removing the gasket and cleanup for the next one is MUCH easier than when using any sealer.

… we’ll I do, and it does. I didn’t invent it.

Edit: oil does anyway.
