I just bought a 1946 CJ2A from the original owners estate. It is very original and even had the dash mounted ignition key with coil. I am hoping to get this re-keyed to use and was hoping that someone can tell me which type it is. I understand that it could be a Yale or Hurd system.
Also, any suggestions as to where I can find an original style key blank? I have a local shop that works on these old parts, but interested in any recommendations for other locksmiths, etc. I assume I can use any standard 6V coil with this?? Thx Vic |

I do not see why one could not use a 12 volt coil with this setup. As long as the coil fits in the bracket, it should be fine. Personally I have had very good luck with local locksmiths when getting keys & locks repaired for old rigs. One major plus to using local shops is the relationship one builds with them. IME, The next time you need their help, they will be there for you. Oh, & X2 on it being a Hurd unit.

That is not an original coil in the photo. The original coil was integrated into the switch assembly, and had its primary circuit input in the base inside the switch assembly. The "top" of the coil had the HT lead and one post for the wire to the distributor.

So the contact between the switch and the coil is direct from the back of the switch to the “base” of the coil, correct? Then you have two terminals on the switch, one is feed and the other is for the gas gauge? I wonder, if one had only the switch/lock part, as it appears Vic has, if one could mount it behind the dash and use the gas gauge terminal to power both the gauge and the coil, using a “normal” coil hidden under the cowl. Original look without some of the unicorn horn.

Dropping this here to keep them together, of a sort... Maybe the one in the photos above is the IG3033CS, vs the usual IG3033XS?

Thanks for the note. I actually sold that parts I had to a friend who just had to have them. I'm using an original two pole switch with a floor starter, and tucking a new coil up under the dash.
