Hello all,

Today I picked up my first 1948 willy`s CJ2A! I paid $700 Canadian for it.
Frame is in pretty decent shape, I`ve only seen one spot that needs repair so far!
The motor was stuck as the PO had said in the ad. Got it home and put some PB blaster in the cylinders and let it sit for maybe an hour. I put on a rachet and it broke free and right away! I must have gotten lucky there.

The main issue is the tub must have rotten away years ago, so someone made a wooden and tin cover cab for it, It works pretty decent by the looks of it but boy is she ugly lol!.

Welcome to the site!  Hopefully you can get it running without too much trouble.  That top looks very interesting and from the few pics I see, A lot of work went into it!  Should be a fun project if you keep the top or not.  Is the grill homebuilt also?  I don't see parking lights on it...?

The lights were filled in, It is an original Grill. The hood is held down by hood pins as well. I would like to go back to original, but i would need alot of stuff. Parts up here seem to be pretty crazy priced for used stuff.

MC86446 is an M38 serial number.
M38's were made 1950-1952.

That chart was put together from forum members reporting what they have.
Meaning that it's far from being a comprehensive history or record of M38 production serial numbers.
Nobody knows for sure the last serial numbers used.
If Willys or the Army kept track of that information, it hasn't been discovered to date.

The bottom line is that Willys used the prefix "MC" in front of serial numbers to designate the M38, both for the jeep serial number and the engine serial number.

In my opinion, you have an M38 engine (except for the head).
Gear drive L134.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Ron!

While looking more I found another stamp just below the engine number but on the front of the block which is.

2C5170 would this be the VSN?

What's a "VSN"?

2C5170 isn't a format I'm familiar with, and I don't understand the location you found it.
A photo would help showing it and the location.

Is it cast into the water pump?

Can you zoom that photo out a bit to show what it's stamped on?
It doesn't look like anything M38 to me.

VSN must be a Canadian thing.
Never heard that in the USA.

Yeah, makes more sense rotated right side up.

Sorry, can't help.
It's not something I've ever seen on a M38 engine.
Nothing about it in the M38 manuals.

Do you have a title or registration for the jeep?
Does that number match any paperwork you have?

Good luck!
