I picked up a nice old jerry can and now need a spout. Are there ones considered "best"?
I will be storing it separate from the can, I think. Never a big fan of pulling a wet fuel covered spout out to use it. Convince me otherwise if I am mis-guided.

Never seen one that stored in the can ?, the ones I have have a rubber seal you insert into the can and a small lever expands the rubber seal… Midwest Military used to have them years ago, not sure today.

The 1” spouts are the best if you can find them but very pricy. Either screw in or pressure seal as Lee said. You can find the 3/4” screw in spouts on eBay for 15-20 dollars.

The one I had on my CJ5 had spout stored inside the can. That was a lot of years ago but, as I recall, it worked much like today’s plastic gas cans. Not fond of the gas on my hands from the spout but I do like the only way to lose the spout is to lose the entire can. Plus I never had a problem keeping the spout clean. The gas gauge didn’t work on that jeep so mine got used fairly regular since it was my daily driver.

I agree, the 1" ones are better. Finding one might be a trick though. They were a bit hard to find even back in 1976.

Back in the day when I was driving my VW Baja, I used to have 4-5 Jerry cans sandwiched together on the back shelf under the window. Two or three of them had the spouts in the can. If used right away after removing the spouts, you would get the fuel all over your hands. I took to removing two of these spouts & setting them aside to dry before I took a hike or ate dinner. Then when I came back, the spouts did not have fuel on them. No muss, no fuss. After that first use, they stayed in the now empty cans. The Baja's tank was ten gallons, thus the two Jerry cans.

Like Jeff J, I used mine fairly regularly. While my fuel gauge worked, I often was out in the woods for a week or two. I hated to come back into "civilization" any more then necessary, thus the fuel cans. I even had a factory VW 2.5 gallon spare fuel can that fit inside of the spare tire. It did see it's fair share of use as well. I did say I really did not want to come to town too often, eh?

It needs to match whatever opening you have.

I'd recommend mil vendors.  Some offer replacement seals, if needed, as well as a pouch to help keep the elements off the spout.

I have a military spout that is stored separately from the can, it is newer and it works perfectly well with the WWII can I have, it just clamps in and I really like it, easy to use and it goes in the tool box when not in use

Original jerry cans just use a standard 2" straight pipe thread.  I use an in-can style spout for my 3B but do not use it that way.  I made an air tight aluminum tube it threads into and that is welded on under the hood.  No "gas hands" and it is always clean when needed.

This is what I have, pull down the lever and it expands the rubber seal, no need to screw in.

Here is a few of the nozzles available, I don’t know if the 1” nozzles are available new. Also a picture of the plastic adapter that is available.
