Several things can contribute to them popping out of 2nd gear, you just found the one that is the easiest to fix, but often missed. Should be the first thing checked.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

Oh yea, checked for a tight snap into 2nd several times, but this time took it apart and checked the size. A 16th of an inch appears to be enough to prevent complete engagement of 2nd gear.
