Looks like an electrical junction box, perhaps a fuse box. It has been rewired at some time.

It is a weather proof box that I keep the registration in. I think Jimmy got it at the Army Surpplus store.

Nice looking jeep! Is it correct for a 46? I thought there would be indents on side for shovel etc. What about tags on dash, my 46 has separate plates here, not a single one. |

That was my guess, I've seen alot of similar boxes mounted on the front or side of semi trailers.

healey, the tool indents were from Willys using the left over MB tubs on the early 2As. They went away before my first '46 column shift (#3xxxx) was built. See the History page for when the single dash plate came into use. Anyway, there is no reason to believe that the Jeep is anything but a '46.

Thanks, here's what I found on the History Page regarding the dash plate..
Willys Serial number---On a plate, on the passenger side firewall by the air cleaner. **Very Early CJ2A's had the serial number stamped on a plate located on the
dash. This later changed to a plate on the firewall under the hood, but I do not know when this change took place. Let me know if you have the number on the dash so I can "Bracket" when Willys change the location. My 2A is a VE and has the serial # on the dash...I mistakenly assumed that all 46s were this way. Guess at some point in 46 they switched this plate to the type we see on this vehicle. My 48 has the same style I think. |
