I was wondering if anybody knows how to tell if the engine is original to a cj2a? I know that the engine #s started at the same # as the jeep id #s, but the engine progressed faster on the engine. I have a 46 with id # 37041 and engine # 4T 40126. My acm # is 27283.

All sounds correct in general. The 4 at the beginning of the engine # is interesting? Can't say it's wrong, just unusual. Maybe Harrold West would have some input. He is interested in everyones' numbers and will tell you what you have. Just fill out his questions at the end of the "CJ2A History" at the home page, then E-mail him. Hope this helps. Gary |

Thanks for the help Gary. I sent my info over to Harold and he thinks either the engine has been rebuild and the number restamped or it is out of some other willys vehicle that he is not sure of the prefix. In general he said the #s sound and look right for this vehicle with the exception of that prefix.

I contacted northstar willys to find out what my engine # went to and they said it is out of a 1948 or 49 4x4 willys truck. I knew that my 46 was hacked up pretty good, but now I know that none of it went together when new. Oh well.... its fun to drive and I have a clean title.

You have done a good job pinning down what you have. There is no shame in a different motor than original. My first 2a has a slat grill MB motor in it that runs like a swiss watch, I wouldn't pull that motor if someone gave me the right one, It sounds just like I want a Jeep to sound like. Gary |

Now that I know that nothing on this rig belongs on this rig I might consider putting it on a better frame. Mine has been boxed in and I have a cj5 chasis that I might set my 2a body on. At first I was set at finding all the correct parts for this old columnshift, but now I am going to use it and have fun. I will save the original restoration for some future flatfender that happens into my life

I have been looking around and checking engine numbers and have found that transplanted engines is pretty common with these!!! There are several jeeps on ebay right now that have the wrong engine in them. I even found anoutherone with a truck engine in it like mine. Here is a real gem though......http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-CJ-willys-cj -2a-WILLYS-CJ2A-1946_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6280QQitemZ4 606300367QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW This ones body, VIN, and engine#s match.... he just can't find the acm# |

Very unlikely that the engine and serial number match and it being a 46. Maybe some of the very earliest ones but my 10043 has engine 10041 and both those numbers are on the original dealers invoice that I have for it.

Hey Gary I have a couple of willys slat grills, If I had your original engine for your 2A I would let you have it just because of the low serial number of your 2A....Just for that act of kindness I would be interested in knowing what the # is on your slat grill motor.

Hi Bill, Yeah, you have a 3 digit serail # willys MB. There was a fella who had #6XX slat grill here in Oregon that was interested in knowing the value. I talked to him once. I should have pursued it more.

Keep in mind a CJ-5 frame is not the same size as a 2A frame and while it can be made to work it is not a simple task.
I have a CJ-5 frame under what is now a completely rebuilt 2A tub and there are many differences in the frames. |
