I looked at said link. Thanks! They did have the Idaho Department of Highways reorganized in 1950. Prior to that it was the Bureau of Highways. It is unclear if they addressed vehicle safety at all in either organization. I also suspect that it did not. However, in 1974, the Idaho Department of Highways became the Idaho Transportation Department. I suspect that this is when they started looking into vehicle safety. This is after "Unsafe at any speed" came out. Written by Ralph Nader, it was first published in 1965. It started folks thinking about vehicle safety. While I disagree with him about the Corvair, he did the country a service by bringing this subject to light. I love these pictures, they remind me of our Jeeps on the ranch/farm I lived at off and on while growing up.

You got me to look! They did! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idaho_Transportation_Department#:~:text=A%20property%20tax%20was%20enacted,became%20the%20Idaho%20Transportation%20Department. Supposedly the original commission's jobs included:
Not clear about how vehicle safety fell in there ... maybe it didn't

No windows on the doors? Or is it something with the picture quality?

Imagine the heat buildup where the boards drag on the sand. I wonder.

Just a photo I came across on the internet.
I suspect they are waiving at the "sand surfers" being towed behind the Jeep. Micah

My theory is that when Willys decided to put the spare on the right rear of the jeep so that they could put a tailgate in and not have to deal with the spare at that location they decided that there probably wasn't enough room. That corner of the tub is kind of boxed in on a CJ and it was even boxed in on the other side when the lefty's were being produced. The reinforcement for the spare would have taken up some of the storage space so they just decided it just wasn't worth the expense.

There would still be a rather large amount of fenderwell storage in any flat fender or CJ5/6 if utilized. The MB/GPW boxes don't come close to utilizing the full potential there. I boxed in both sides when putting my 12:12 plastic car kit together for my 3B tub, along with making a large glove box. That (and some under hood storage) has kept all the spare parts/fluids/trail gear out of the bed.

Was it a cost shavings or the fact that a decent heater would not fit in the same space as the glove box? I tend to think it was for the heater.
