I was under the impression that a rear brake upgrade to 11" brakes was a direct bolt up upgrade. The backing plates of the 11" brakes have four bolt holes (off 1976 cj5). The backing plates on my 1948 CJ2A have six bolts holding the backing plate to the rearend housing. Do I just drill six holes in the CJ5 backing plates ?

Ditto on all 4 corners. If you do just the rears it will make for some interesting driving. But you will be able to do nice hairpin slides.

I would think redrilling the backing plates may be a simple solution if you can do it precisely. If that is the only fit issue give it a shot. Do a loose trial fit first with shoes adjusted all the way in, and trial fit the drum to make sure there aren't any clearance issues and the shoes locate correctly, then drill. Any machine shop should be able to handle it, and I bet even just marking the hole locations when the backing plate is fitted to the axle would work. Does the center hole on the backing plate match the 2A hole?
And ditto on the four wheel deal. Bet ya knew that already tho. Edited by F Bill - 22 July 2008 at 4:48pm |

Thanks everyone.
I like the clean look of your conversion wiffle9, Hope mine come out that clean.
I have slowly gathered parts to install disk on the fronts. I have gathered the mid 1970's chevy pu calipers & caliper plates, I will buy the mid 1970's Jeep cj5/cj7 front rotors and also the correct conversion master cyclinder.
You guys that did 11" drums on all four corners did you upgrade your master cyclinder ?
would you install disk up front if you had it to do again ?

you have backing plates from a Corp 20 axle from a '76 that is why you don't have 6 holes. |
