Well, I started on the Bantam trailer this week, so I thought I'd start this thread.

First picture is what it looked like when it got home. Looks pretty good from 20 feet.

These pictures are of some of the "upgrades" that were made, thankfully the hole and the bracket for the taillight were left alone. Notice the angle iron welded under the bottom of the tailgate and the extra bracing for the sides. Bubba must have had some extra angle iron. It's actually well done, which means it's proving to be a b.tch to remove.

Made some progress on the trailer yesterday and today, went through a 10 pack of cutoff wheels, when my wife came home her statement was "I'd almost forgotten the smell of grinding wheels and rusty metal, now it's baaaaak" LOL

Here's the extra pieces I cut off the rear of the trailer, now have some more scrap metal for other projects.

This looks a whole lot better

Wondering if this is original tailgate chain, what do you guys think. Pretty cheesy looking chain, but then some cheesy stuff was made in 47.

Here's the trailer hooked up this morning, took it to the media blaster, should get it back next Monday, then the fun starts.

Got the trailer back from the blaster today, not a pleasant experience, the work was fine it's just that when I went to hook up the trailer to my truck, the receiver hitch on my truck was goneAngry, not sure if someone stole it or it fell off, kind of hope it was stolen, I don't like the idea of that thing bouncing down the freeway and somebody running into it. So down to the local (and expensive) auto parts store to get a new one.  Then I brought the trailer home and in the process of backing down the hill to my "shop"LOL I started sliding on the wet grass and the trailer jacknifed and the corner took out one of my taillights. Not my kind of day. Anyway, got the thing in the tent/shop, cleaned all the leftover media out of it for about an hour, and then shot a coat of epoxy DTM sealer on it. Now the work starts.LOL

One of those SNAFUs is more than enough for any given day.  Both of them is too much.  I guess it is wonder more receiver hitches don't go missing as often as some of us don't bother to stow them after unhitching a trailer.

I've been puttering around on the trailer the last few months, ambition seems to be in short supply lately, I think it's due to my uncertain future plans, but hopefully that will be corrected soon. My latest part of the trailer project has been dealing with the "taillight" question. Original Arrow taillights seem to be scarcer than NACO's (doesn't seem possible), so I decided to go in a different direction. Model A taillights have a similar appearance and are readily available. The biggest problem is the mounting arrangement which is totally different. I figured out a way around it and will post it in the "Tech" section as soon as I get the pictures and process completely figured out. Here's a pic of where I'm at now. (the housings will have to be painted or powdercoated black, I just haven't gotten that far yet).

Got the fenders and the tailgate painted today, next up is to drop the tub and get that painted. Then assembly and wiring. (then I'll have to find something else to doLOL) I know it's not an original color, but I'm kinda partial to black.

Milestone, got the tub sealed and painted today. Now I can start wiring and assembling. I repaired it structurally but didn't go nuts trying to remove all the "character" dings and dents that have accumulated over the past 60+ years (I didn't paint the floor because I'm going to "Rhinoline" it, I know there's been some "spirited" discussion in the past, but this is a compromise I made with myself for utility reasons)

Looking good...at least with black you don't have to mask b/t painting bottom and topsides!

Making a little progress every day (actually I'm trying to get it done so I can move it to storage in preparation for the upcoming construction). Got the springs and axles hung today, was going to get the wheels and fenders on as well, but the shoulder started protesting too much, I'll see how it feels tomorrow. (frustrating part is that it now takes me 4 hours to do a half hour jobAngry)

Hi Gale,
Nice job on the trailer.
YES, that chain is original by the way. My first one had that same chain, and the second one had larger stuff.
Send your pic to Bill Norris. We were talking about that once. If I remember correctly he found some at a local hardware store by him. Hes a stickler for details so surely the chain he used was authentic.
Regards.

I think the type of tailgate chain depends on the year, as it is with wheels, safety chains, etc.  Mine still had the original canvas coverings.
