Looking to identify if my front axle is a Dana 25. I have not been able to uncover any markings yet except for this tag. Not sure what it means but is held on with looks like 2 small flat head screws. Looks like it reads 273 but hard to tell. Here is 2 different angles. Anyone know what this means? Thanks.

That is a casting number that was cast into the center pig during its manufacture for identification purposes at the axle assembly plant at Dana; the company that manufactured the axle assembly.

I think the dana axles have the model number cast in the housing somewhere. Right now my jeep has a ford axle and has a GP part number cast in it.

The easiest way to ID a Jeep axle is by looking at examples of the cover shape. |

Not really the best way in this case.
25, 27, 30 all use the same front cover. 25 and 27 closed knuckle. 30 open knuckle.

25, 27 and 30 share the same cover pattern/shape.
Where is the breather hose? I believe all 25's were vented via the diff cover. The 27 moved the vent to the center section. But don't quote me.
That sure looks like a 27. There are really no differences in the housings. The center section is a little beefier. |

I’m sure I will find the markings once I sandblast and start tearing it down. It is vented on the front cover. Here’s the best pic I have with me.

The front is a Dana 25. The rear is a Dana 41. These are the standard axles on most CJ2As and early CJ3As.

I found a tag on my rear Dana 41 attached to one of the cover bolts. It reads 43/8 which is the 5.38 ratio. Has Dana always tagged them? My CJ2A is a 47 and just wondering if they tagged them back then (original) or if someone has swapped to a newer diff.

The tags are often lost or left off when a prior owner removes the diff cover. Lots of this kind of stuff happens over 70 years.

I am looking for the placement and id of the tags bolted to the cover of the front Differential. i thought i took a pic of them both before i tore them down. one tag I found had the numbers 43 on it! I do not know if there was another one or not. 8
I would appreciate any information on this also where it was at on the bolt pattern. I saw a pic of the rear diff and i think it was on the lower right corner bolt. Thank You YFICA Russ
