they hold the drum on.   you may have a later year hub which had them. I think the M38 was the first to use them.

Victor, it's a jeep!    they are more common than you think.  They simply hold the drum in place.  Many guys remove them.

Yes, some had the screws. A few of them, the screws helped center the drum to the hub. Some older cars had  spring clips on the lugs to hold the drum on. Once the wheel was bolted on the clips were worthless.

Well checking my old memory banks I do remember the round push on spring clips. I always thought they were a pain in the ass idea. Live & learn thats what its all about.

Be glad you have that type front brake setup,  yes they are from M38s, CJ3B, CJ5s. Make a note in your service manual that you might have M38 backing plates

They are much easier to service, ya don't have to remove the locking hubs and wheel bearings to pull the hubs and drum assemblies. Wink

Belleview ol skool winch soon.

The screws might have had a more important purpose than the spring clips, I’m not sure but I really don’t think so, but the only purpose for the spring clips on GM cars was to prevent the drums from falling off on the assembly line.

I also did not like those springs clips. Gm,amc, and Ford used them.  Always had a pair of dykes in hand to remove them.

VICTOR....if you removed the screws to check out the brakes, put a little grease on the screws so they won't rust solid.  The're a pain to take off once frozen from rust..

Bolding mine.

Anti-Seize would be better as it will not get washed out from crossing streams. Grease will.

Senior moment.....WHAAAAAAT!

PS:  if you every have those screws rusted tight, get an acetylene torch with fine flame and heat just the head of the screws red hot.  Let it cool completely.  Screw will now come right out.  Expands the bolt, breaks the rust seal.  Works on just about any bolt.
Propane won't work.  Not hot enough to heat just the bolt head.

I just did some brake work on a 1945 M8 Greyhound, with the same three screws to hold the drums on. Rh thread while the lug nuts were LH thread. I guess it will be a long time before those drums just fall off!
I wish people would quit hittin' me on the head. MQ

I kinda like the ones with the three scews. I found that without the three screws, that the drum moves around on the hub and can make it offset with the shoes making it of center and pulsating brakes. The srewa holt the drum in place over the shoes and when you tighten the wheel on, the drum is centered and cannot move.
