Working on my ‘52 CJ3A with original engine. Removed timing gear cover to replace crank pulley seal. I was surprised to see a hole in the front plate that barely gives the gasket a surface to seal. The hole is about 1”x 1 1/2” and the fuel pump is right behind it.
Is this normal? I took a pic of it but haven’t figured the posting process yet. Thanks for any info.

Yes, that is normal. I believe the hole is for clearance for the fuel/vacuum pump. It's a pretty crappy design and I usually smear some sealant into the cavity corner after it's assembled.

to many jeeps, parts, and accessories to list here, but apparently enough to keep me in trouble with my wife. |

That’s what I did, good or bad it’s full of Permatex#2.
Thanks for the explanation. Yeah that is a bad design probably no more than a half inch for the gasket to seal.

Bad design? How wide does it need to be? This engine design is well over 80 years old and they don’t leak at that point. BW
