GROUP 12 - 09 --- FUEL PUMP
Pump, Fuel, Assembly (int'ch'ble with 646248)...........Part NO. 640160
Pump, Fuel, Assembly (Carter) (int'ch'ble with 640160)...........Part NO. 646248
This is from the '49 parts list.
So which bowl is correct for the original part? the yellow zinced AC steel or the glass bowl? I've always thought the glass bowl...But I never really asked anyone. The steel one came on #34692 and quickly failed after years of being dry. The parts manuel shows what appears to be the steel. I guess I like the glass because I can see whats going on in there..or not.

I'm three for three with glass bowls. I am all but certain that the original bowl was glass.

#640160 is the only pump listed in the '45 & '47 Parts Lists. Those lists only show a metal bowl, #A-1494 (same as MB). This would be the original AC pump.
The '49 Parts List has #640160 being superceded by #646248 (Carter), and has both metal & glass replacement bowls listed. So I'm betting the glass bowl wasn't used until after the '47 List was published. There's no engine number change point listed. But as with all things Willys, we'll never know for sure! I'm not ready to let this go to metal yet because I'm reading in the 1948 Mechanics Manual that the CJ2A used the AC Model AF fuel pump. I have also seen references to the MB fuel pump's being the same model and in those references that the bowl was glass.
Sean, do your sources confirm that the MB bowl was metal all through production?
I have not been able to find any serious documentation of the model AF so all I can do for now is to raise doubt. Edit: (and I do see the metal bowl in the '45 parts List) Edited by samcj2a - 23 June 2007 at 2:08pm |

Consensus of the G503 is that all wartime production MB/GPW pumps had metal bowls. They were essentially the same pump as used on CJ2A, but also included a manual hand primer lever:
The '47 AEA datasheet for CJ2A lists the pump as: "AC Type 572, No. 1538886, Series AF"A '49 ORD-9 MB parts list, has 3 pumps in order:
Quite a few MB are found w/glass bowls. It's presumed that previous owners replaced the bowls w/glass, either due to damaged metal ones, or simply to be able to see the fuel. The same might have been done on early CJ2A, but we'll never know for sure. Sean |

This is all very depressing , but thank you for the information. I'm with Gary and really like the appearance of the glass bowls and, probably as influential, strongly believed that the glass bowls were original. I'll be looking for a replacement metal bowl.

This one's a new one on me as well.. I guess we learn something everyday here. (I like the glass bowls better)
I can see the reason for a metal bowl in the military. I would hate to be getting shot at while fiddling with it only to drop it and have it break . I've chased one across a concrete floor before..good thing I broke the fall with my foot.

I've scrutinized 4 pumps, and found some interesting stuff. While all very similar to each other, none are exactly the same. Minor details must have changed over the years.
Too many gory details to post here, web page at: Four pumps in a row Gary: the metal bowl pump photo you posted above appears to be identical to my '45 dated pump. Can you find casting numbers or date clock? What vehicle did it come off? Jeff: no prime lever = non-MB pump (that's the G503 consensus anyway) Sam: smile, be happy! Nothing wrong w/a glass bowl. I plan to use one, it's just more sensible:

Mike:
I know little about MB, am just repeating what all the "experts" on the G503 say. As with so many other parts, it's near impossible to say if something was original as it came off the assembly line, or had been replaced at some point. Considering that the '49 ORD-9 parts list (4 years after MB production ended) lists the most recent pump being the same as used on CJ2A, it's likely that post-war motorpool maintenance would have used a non-primer pump for replacement. The '44 TM9-803 (MB maintenance) manual says: "The pump is equipped with a hand lever on the rear side which can be used to operate the pump for priming the carburetor bowl".Did every MB have one? I have no idea. Can you find a casting date on yours? Sean Edited by sean - 25 June 2007 at 1:08pm |

Hmm, doesn't look like you'll be using a glass bowl after all!

I just brought home my 1946 #19248 and it has the metal bowl instead of the glass one on the pump.

Hello all,
while browsing through an excellent period photo library I came across a nice photo of a CJ2A showing a fuel pump top bowl cover quite clearly. The Photo is dated June 1945 and is part of a comparison with a standard Willys MB. cheers Bill. |
