The fuel sender on my '46 CJ2a started acting up the other day, jumping from full to empty and everywhere in between. I checked all of the wires and they're okay. I pulled it out of the tank to see if there was something stuck or obstructing travel but the float arm seemed to be moving smoothly. I got my hands on a new unit and it works fine. I looked on the web but couldn't any info on repairing or refurbishing old fuel senders. Does anyone know where to find info on repairing these things?

Uncrimp and open the wire resistor, clean it if it is intact, and clean the wiping contact, bending it toward the resistor wire.

Would you use a fine brass brush to clean the contacts or something else?

I would lean towards spray contact cleaner or brake clean and blow dry, polish with a clean cloth--- no abrasives. Don't want a rough or pitted surface.

I gave the fuel sender a hard look and it appears the top and bottoms halves don't look like they were meant to come apart, and nothing looks like it can be uncrimped. Could you post a photo of what you're looking at?
