I am looking for an accurate set of Goodyear 6.00-16" NDT replacement tires.
It looks like all new replacements are branded "MILITARY". Are these the only ones available?

I just recently was looking for tires, and from what I could tell Goodyear does not make them; however I did see some made by BF Goodrich somewhere. I'm not sure where I saw them though because I was looking for something less pricey than what they offered (seems like they were going for something like $200.00 or better a tire).

I wouldn't be surprised if all NDT's (and NDCC's) are marked "MILITARY"?
They are, after all, a military tread design.

Civilian users never had much need for a "non-directional" tread pattern.

Most tires are non-directional. It merely means that the tire can be mounted on either side of the vehicle with either side out. It has nothing to do with being able to tell which direction the vehicle is traveling. A fair-to-middlin’ tracker can tell which way a vehicle is going regardless of what tire tread pattern it has. Tractor tires are directional and some mud and snow tires are directional. They work better rotating in one direction than they do in the other. They are marked with an arrow on the sidewall to indicate the correct direction of rotation.

Yup, well aware of modern tires and use of the term as it applies to them.

My comment was referring only to the ancient outdated use of the term (the "ND" in NDT and NDCC MILITARY tires only), going back to WW2 up until the military got rid of them with the last of the early M-series trucks almost 50 years later.

Naturally, I could easily be mistaken about the idea of not being able to easily determine vehicle direction by looking at its tire tracks (or making it harder anyway).......can't fool Tonto.
Pretty sure satellites and drones made all that stuff obsolete anyway.

Just urban legend I guess.

I'd still be surprised if he can find one on the market today that isn't branded "MILITARY".

Military has not gotten rid of them yet - we are still using them and they are still available in the Military supply system. Nearly every M-200 Generator Trailer on my base has 4 of the same size as the M35s for example. We've phased out the M35-A2s for A3s that now use the Michelins Singles

Those that have been around know the reproduced GoodYear story - I'm sure Keith will chime in on this.

Yes, The only 6:00-16 Goodyear NDT currently offered does have the Military marking on the sidewall.

If you care about how that decision was made, the process is well documented on the G503.

In a nutshell, the individual Willys Bill of Materials for each model was referenced, and a table was assembled covering the Goodyear part number for each tire. The Goodyear mold drawings for the part numbers documented all the individual stamping details for every tire.

The Military designation carried over into the Civilian Jeep, and was intended to be mounted on the wheel so the Military stamping was on the back. The S-3 marking, designating Synthetic Rubber, continued for several years after the was and was on the NDT's till sometime in 1953 as I recall.

Willys was not a FIFO factory, so the tire specifications allowed mixing tires with different sidewall stamping as long as they were the same BRAND. ( no BFG mixed with Goodyear)

So yes, there is only one design available, and it is the most common that was used.

So to summarize, the 600x16 GOODYEAR NDT tires that are now available from Coker Tire & Summit Racing are correct OEM replacement for a 1945 CJ2A in 2023, right?

I think they are as close to being correct as you can get.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

As to your original concern about the "military stamp, it only says "military" on one side. If you don't want it to show, have them all face inward. I wanted them outward and asked them to be mounted that way. Unfortunately, the printing is so small that the guys couldn't find it and I got some in and some out. Only a few people would ever know.

Before ordering, check with your tire place. Had I ordered them through them, they would have price matched and given lifetime balancing.

Yes, they are the only ones with correct sidewall markings, tread pitch count, and minimized modern DOT marking.

However although you can purchase them thru Coker, it is somewhat counterproductive to buy them from Coker. Kelsey Tire, the only licensee for Goodyear Product, is Coker's only competition.
Coker is licensed for most of the major brands except Goodyear.

Keith,
Are the Goodyear NDTs different than the Firestone ones that I have?
I always thought that any of the NDTs available now were pretty much made by Coker.

Stan, yes, the Goodyear's are the only ones with the correct 50 pitch tread pattern.

Coker actually sells 2 different Firestones, one is a generic NDT tread with the Firestone script, the other is the correct Firestone for the GPW's.

Corky Coker is a neighbor of mine. I don't know him, but I have seen him at several vintage car events.

I went the cheaper route with my CJ2A and bought "Deestone" NDTs which, at the time were a bargain, but those have went up and not such a bargain now. That Jeep is just a ragged old farm Jeep, so I wasn't concerned about authenticity. The tires have performed well so far.

My current project is different, and I want it to look as correct as possible. The next set I buy will be from Coker.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

I see Corky several times a year also, but at places like SEMA or Amelia Island.

Corky has had no involvement in the tire business in at least 4 years (I believe), when he stepped down and was replaced by Wade Kawasaki, and the company was purchased by the Irving Capital Group, and consolidated with other auto aftermarket businesses such as Wheel Vintiques (Corky's brother's company). Last I knew, Wade stepped down and they have a temporary Chairman right now.
