Stan, your 'turkey poo' description of a cold, poorly executed weld is humorous but only because there was no catastrophic failure related to it. As one of your many 2Apage.com fans, I'm relieved that you indirectly discovered the problem before calamity struck. Now, please take a welding course (they're not expensive) or leave the repairs--particularly those that are safety related -- to your professional-welder pal.

Yes, a lot of the welds on old Jeeps looked like garbage. My MB did fine, not sure about some on my 3B.
I can weld, stick or wire feed, gas? I have had a few offers for jobs. Thank you no. Welding shops just stink. A welding instructor wondered what weld I was showing to him, Vertical down. "Crap, you weld better than I do"'

Professional-looking welds are what Stan has now, but more important than aesthetics is those pro welds on Grandpa's Jeep have professional penetration. 'Turkey poo' welds tend to have the penetration of...turkey poo. Not what any of us want at Moab or on the street.

Stan, great video of a great Jeep! How is your roll bar fixed to the wheelhouses? I'm debating a roll bar/cage for my 2A.

Not to be the loose bolt police... but I noticed in your video that one of the bolts for the cross member is loose and missing the nut. There’s still two so nothing serious
Thanks for sharing your mods.

Stan,
Not to pick your Jeep apart, since we all here love the old girl and what your do with her, I have a question about your radiator. It seems to my eye to sit further back than normal and almost looks to be narrower than the original. My felt sits tight against the top header and is tucked into the flange on the sides. Yours felt doesn't contact the radiator. I remember you had to do some modifications to get that Omix radiator to work. I'm just curious if these are additional issues associated to Omix. Again, not picking. Just something I saw as I watched. Micah

Stan - I am curious to see how your U bolt spring plates are welded so they also incorporate the shock "pin". I love the idea of creating more ground clearance and protecting the U bolts from impact. Could you post a few pictures for our viewing pleasure?

These spring plates were made by Jeff (Jpet). These pictures are of an experimental one he sent me with the side a little higher to try and capture more of the spring pack. This one ended up being a little bit too tall for the front passenger side, but hopefully you can see the construction method. Basically two pieces of angle iron welded to a flat plate with a hole drilled in it for the spring pack center pin, and gussets welded in the corners for strength and the shock mount welded on. Jeff took it an extra step and threaded the shock mount stud. Makes it a ton easier to get the shock seated. |

That's a phrase that could get worn out here! And I mean that as a very high compliment!
