Hello all.
I am new to the forum and soon to be restoring our 45 Willys that has been in our family forever. It is really in good shape for its age, runs great. It has all original motor, tranny, etc. I want to get it as close to stock as possible, with some changes. My first issues to tackle are rewiring and brakes. After that it will be very close to street legal and I can look into painting, tires and wheels, and going thru the engine - would like to try to squeeze a little more power from the 4 cylinder. Hopefully you guys can help with questions and experiences on this vehicle. I will post a pic (of the willys) as soon as I'm allowed...or someone could recommend a place to host. Welcome and as far as posting pics, if you'll scroll down thru the topics under "General Discussion" you'll find one on " How I post a pic" and it'll tell you how. It's real simple, I've used it several times since Cath posted it. Good luck with the 45 and keep us posted, also is it still a column shift or has it been changed to floor shift. On the brakes you might want to consider a swap to 11 inch brakes. Just my 2 cents. |

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Heres the pic...nevermind the passengers. Some things to note, the bumper was made by my grandpa. I will be taking it off and going with another look...although I dont know what yet. You can see where we had sanded down on the side of the hood and found yellow military tag numbers. The roll bar will probably not stay either...I dont really like that one. TX 45, That ain't a 2a. It looks to me like you have a MB/GPW. That's a good thing And it looks in great shape. You have a little bit of heaven there, not to take anything away from the 2a, but the military jeeps are very hard to find. You will find alot more info on the "G" Great Jeep, Gary |

Forgive my ignorance. Whats the difference? I was always told thats what it was...never thought to question it.
I know the plate on the glove compartment says it was manufactured in 1945...i think the exact date was 10/10/45. Does the plate also have vehicle model? Would it say if it was cj2a or MB? I will be picking the jeep up from my parents house easter weekend. I will know a lot more about it when I get it in my garage. I will have more pics then too. Well,,,, not a whole lot of difference, just alot of little things. Oh and one big one. The MB is probably worth far more than a typical 2a. And the parts are far more spendy. I envy your trip to pick up this old warhorse, it may not be just another trip to Ma and Pa's it has every indication of the start of an obsession. Gary |

Go over to the G503 website (www.G503.com) and check out the For Sale Forum. A guy from Maine named Ren Bernier has written a very good book for those who are just gettinginto the hobby of military vehicles. THere is a sticky post at the top of the For Sale forum advertising the book. PLeeeeeese.. Beg Borrow or Buy that book. It will keep you from making some very bad and expensive mistakes. It will also get you completely hooked on your jeep. It looks like you have a 1945 MB, not a CJ2A, and that is a very excellent thing! Congratulations, and welcome to the MV hobby! |

TX 45, Well, How about welcome from Texas?!! Your jeep looks to be in great condition! A few things that tip the guys off to think it might be a MB or GPW. The rear axle is a full floater, the tool indents on the drivers side, the black out light guard over the light on the drivers fender, the smaller head lamps, with no rings, the rear mounted spare tire, the fuel tank visable under the drivers side panel. Look on the top of the frame on the drivers side, between the rad. and the steering box for the frame #'s. It should have a "star" then thepre-fix, MB or GPW, then the #. Also, you can look at the bolt heads that look to be original, if they have a letter "F" is script, it might be a GPW, although by '45 most of the Script bolts and hardware had been dropped from production. Sorry about being so long winded... some of us just get worked up when it comes to these old jeeps. MG

Thanks for all the replies...I gotta change my screen name now.
USMC - thats the info that I was looking for - what sets it apart from a cj. Some more history about this jeep: My grandparents have had it for as long as I remember (prolly before my time actually), always a hunting lease and farm jeep. Whenever I turned 10 (some 15+ years ago) my grandpa decided I was old enough to learn to drive. This was the first vehicle I drove, and was what I looked forward to on weekends. I first started driving it with blocks of wood behind me so that I could reach the pedals. Eventually I grew out of that. We have maintained this jeep very well, but we always used it for what it was...and it held up to the punishment. Now I just want it to be back like stock. cant wait till I get it street legal and can drive it around town...will prolly get some interesting looks. Anyways, look forward to keeping up with you guys and checking out your jeeps. Edited by TX 45 CJ2A - 03 Apr. 2006 at 9:28pm |

TX, You are a newbie and have come to the right place. You may have gathered from the posts here . Your Grandpa's JEEP IS MORE THAN Just another Jeep I would encourage you to do a little research here, or better yet on the "G" as you have a very good looking Military Jeep. What you will find is that you can't in all good conscience do anything with your Jeep untill you know the history of it....... There are alot of places to get that history but the best place is the "G". You have opened up a new thread in the wwII history that has to be addressed before you create your own piece of it. You are very fortunate as many look for years to find what your Grandpa took such good care of. I look forward to your discoveries and hope that you keep us updated after the "G" sucks you in. Gary |
