I just want to check my wiring with the experts before I burn the horn up. I have a 47 CJ2 with low "pitch" Sparton horn. Not the original but it's all I have. I have a 6V system and have a 6V relay and I plan to just use a button on the dash for the switch. The horn has one terminal only. So I have the black wire from the ammeter which is always hot and it goes to the relay, a blue wire that goes from the switch to the other terminal on the relay, and then a (12 ga?) wire from the relay to the horn. I'll make sure the horn is ground to the firewall and the other side of the switch is grounded also. Anyone agree with this? Comments welcome. The horn doesn't say 6 or 12V but it came on the jeep and it was and still is 6V.

It really depends on how your relay is set up. Most horn relays use power from the positive side of the battery to activate the load, (horn), circuit. Very few use a ground for the switching circuit. If your relay is expecting power from the positive post & you give it a ground, (negative side), it will not toot your horn. It also will not hurt anything, it just will not work. The color of the wire does not matter to electricity. It only matters to electricians & mechanics. Wire size does matter with electricity. The wire from the ammeter & the wire to the horn needs to be big enough to handle the load of the horn. IHTH, Cpt Logger. PS. The horn will not "burn up" if it is wired incorrectly. It will just not work. Or it will work all the time. Now if you were to put 24 volts to a 6 volt horn, that will "burn it up". Edited to add PS. Edited by cpt logger - 10 July 2019 at 4:18am |
