Fellow CJ2A'ers:

Problem # 1:

Regardless of whether you like this new forum or not, it's here, but we're beginning to have a spam problem. See the last postings on this thread:

UPDATE 10-17-05:  the thread below has been purged of SPAM, so it's no longer a good example of the problem I was talking about.  SC

There's at least one other spam I've seen, about a week ago, but can't recall which thread it was in.

It's easy to understand why this is happening.  The OLD forum is still active, new porn is being posted there every day, and there's messages inviting everyone to come on over here to the new forum.

The spammers are catching on to it, and now showing up here.  This needs to be nipped in the bud before it gets out of control.

I've been in contact with Russ, and offered to clean up the old board, and turn it into a read only archive so we don't lose the valuable information that's still there.  Russ has agreed, but I need access to all the files, and email coordination with Russ has been very slow.  The sooner I can get to it, the easier & quicker it will be.

Problem # 2:

The old board didn't have photo posting.  This new one does, but it's occasionally dysfunctional.

As many of you have noticed, some photos won't display in the postings.  All you see is a big red "X", or some other indication of broken photo (there is a workaround, see the end of this post).

I'm quite certain (though can't prove it) that it's because THIS FORUM does not have a domain name. You'll notice that this forum is being served by "www.thecj2apage.com" (an IP address) rather than a domain.

An internet lookup on www.thecj2apage.com, returns with a "domain unknown" error.

By itself, this doesn't make things dysfunctional, but may cause OTHER servers to refuse a request for information.  That's why you're seeing the red "X".

For security purposes (particularly anti-spam measures), some sites have configured their servers to REFUSE requests which come from nameless (no domain) IP addresses.  That's what's happening with these broken pictures.  Apparently, some of the public "picture hosting" sites are enforcing this "reverse-lookup" policy.

The only way to fix this is to get a registered domain name for this forum, or put it back on "theCJ2Apage" server.

This workaround exposes the picture issue:

When you see the red "X" (or other broken image indicator), simply copy the image web address, and paste it into a new browser window.  Now you WILL be able to see the image.

Why?  Because, you are sending this request directly from your computer to the remote server (bypassing this nameless forum), and you DO have a domain name (the domain of your ISP).

Perhaps a few polite emails or PMs to Russ about these issues might prod him to action, and we might get it all fixed soon.

Your questions, comments and suggestion are welcome, either in this thread, or PM or email

Sean

YOU are the man. This new format is the way to go!! I'll back you in what ever way you decide to go with it. I have seen the tag alont post on the "Old" board but didn't click on them. I agree with the read only thing. I wonder why those folks don't use there tallents for something positive like restoring Jeeps or other vehicles.

I am working on updating the 2a page and the ip address is the new home. When it comes time I will switch the dns to point to the new server. Until then it will continue this way.

Also I can delete any post alot easier than on the old board.

Also if spammers become a problem I will have to make everyone register to post.

Let me know if you see any other junk posts.

Thanks
Russ

Picture didn't come through because the address you posted is not an image, but something else.

"http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/HomePage.woa/35/wo/Wjg03Qfh bKaLdeAq.1/27.0.1.0.4.2.17.0.3.33.97.0.71.0.3.3ile0"

You need to get to an address that ends in ".jpg" or ".gif" or ".png" etc, etc.
