Hi CJ2A fans

Been away for several years...then I got a Flat Fender Aficionado in the mail last week and I read it cover to cover and loved it...

So my deal seems to be....I find the ole heaps...I try to save them and then I send them...

I see guys on here working on the same Jeeps for years on end...

How do you keep the same vehicles for so many years?....I get them to a point and get bored with them...

I wish I had the ability to keep something for years...my current project (off topic) I have had in my shop almost 11 months and I am ready to send it away...the one before only lasted 6 months

Do I need to have more than one project going at a time maybe??

Rotate them in and out of the garage maybe??

Any insight would be a wonderful thing...

Well, in my case I had Ol' Red in storage for 20 some-odd years. I've owned her for 54 years this April but only became serious about restorative work about 7 years ago.

I find it harder to work on her the older I get. It is hard for me to get under the frame to make repairs and harder to lean over the fender to reach the odds and ends in the engine compartment. I have worked as a mechanic for most of my adult life and don't particularly enjoy that kind of work, but it kept food on the table and me out of trouble elsewhere.

I enjoy the driving of Ol' Red more than I do the turning of a wrench and that is why I've kept her for all these years.

In my case, storage space.
I have a big pole barn and started collecting them about 20 years ago. If you have the space, it’s easy to forget about them.
If I lived in city limits with one garage, city ordnances, or not much room to store stuff… it would be a lot harder to walk past a project vehicle each day and not see results.

If you drive a particular Jeep a lot; I mean a LOT as in “daily driver“ you can become very attached to them.
They become an extension of yourself like an exoskelton.
I no longer have my very first Willys
(a cj2a) but I can still rattle off the serial plate number of that Jeep.
I don’t recall the plate numbers on any of the later dozen or so that I have or currently still retain.

I think it’s just a matter of finding the “right” one. I never owned a vehicle of any kind, new or used, for more than 6 years before the pickup I drive now. I bought it new in 2008 and is the second of it’s make and model I have owned. I think I had the first one 3 years (bought it new too).

I'm sort of like Ken.  I can not envision life without my 3B or CJ5.  Those will both be going to friends when I depart this planet.  I've owned the CJ5 for 54 years (bought new) and the 3B for 51.  Bored is definitely not a problem with the 3B.  The CJ5 has spent the last 15 years sitting in the shop but is next on the queue for a rehab.  It shouldn't need too much as the rig only has 42k on it, zero rust, and pretty much stock (OD/rear tank and tire carrier/4bbl/headers).  Even the T86AA remains functional.  knocks on wood--------

I guess I like too many different kinds of vehicles and I want to taste a lot of different ones before I crash and burn for good...

Love oval track stuff..(current garage filler is a vintage oval track car)

Love smelly old trucks...

Love old Jeeps...

Love rat rods...

Love old air cooled stuff...

Love old Datsun 520/521 pickups...

I even like old Morris Minors too...

As my wife says..."you are a squirrel with out the tail"...

Thanks for all the insight...you guys are awesome on here...

There is your answer right there. You get bored. I think its safe to say many of us love driving our jeeps. So boredom is not usually a problem.

Otherwise, it is basically a collector activity and why bother IMO unless you love looking a jeeps but not using them.

1948 cj2a. Rebuilt L-head, steering, T90, WO 636, steering, brake lines. So far.

Mike,
I think it goes back to your comfort in driving a slow, unsafe old vehicle in your area. I remember having a discussion about this with you years ago. Fixing them is fun, and for some of us the main fun, but for many of us, we fix them so we can drive them. If you don't love driving them, then why keep them around?

I've had my crawler Jeep for 29 years. It was once my daily driver. It slowly evolved into the Jeep it is today. It's carried me all over the counrty from Tellico to KOH. I once fell on hard times (divorce/custodial parent) and was going to sell it. My then 8 year old son emptied his piggy bank and asked "will this help? How the hell could i sell it? I only use it a couple times a year. I still think about letting it go to someone who would appreciate it and use it for what it was built for. But universally the family will never let me do it. It's a family member at this point.

That said - I've owned 37 other Jeeps (last count) over the years. I don't seem to hang on to much of anything that long. At least I didn't, until recently.

The CJ5 i built - i really like that Jeep. This one is a bit of a culmination of all the stuff I like about jeeps. Not for sale.

The 46 I'm doing now - this one is my history lesson. I'm learning to appreciate what once was, instead of immediately ripping things apart and modifying them. It's been a gratifying journey so far. Not for sale.

So as someone else may have mentioned, when you find the right jeep, you just kind of hang on to it.

In my case I have wanted the jeep I have since I first sat in it at age 5 in 1962 I see no logical reason to change that now.

Hey Stan

Man o man...you hit it right on the head I guess...never thought that if I don't enjoy driving them why keep them around??

I see your videos pop up on Facebook with grandpas Jeep...always amazes me what the old heap will do....I so totally agree with your theory...

I do enjoy the hunt and acquisition and the saving of them...

Just when it comes to getting behind the wheel...makes me sick to my stomach most of the time...white knuckles...head on a swivel...sick to my stomach..

Please keep posting those videos...glad you got a roll bar on that old Jeep...makes me smile when I watch them...

Interest in and affection for old jeeps. My 2A was purchased new in 1947 ($1050) by my dad. He put 80,000 miles on it and gave it to me in the early 1980s.

I too have regrets about the vehicles I once owned and sold over the years. My wife once asked me how many cars I had owned, and I lost count around 50+

I regret trading the 56 Belair I had in high school the most of all of them.

Now that I have gotten back into Jeeps I regret selling a nearly pristine M38 decades ago.

I enjoy driving the old Jeeps, where I live there is no problem with high speed traffic, and a Jeep is perfect for a quick run into what passes for a "town" out here.

I also enjoy putting an old Jeep back into reliable condition, though it is getting harder for me to crawl under them.

Driving an open Jeep down the road, through mud, and across the streams where I fish is exciting to me, and I don't get bored with doing the work to put them back in shape, though age and arthritis is making me very slow at doing it.

I love the sound, sight, and smell of a flathead engine.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

I relate to being more interested in working on them than driving them. I had a '71 Nova SS for many years and loved slowly fixing it up, but once it was done I drove it a few years, then got bored with it and sold it. Still don't regret it either.
My father-in-law bought our '47 back in the '60's. He bought another one in the '80's and fixed it up. He decided to sell the '47, which was in many pieces. We bought it and I put it together. Then I received his '66 CJ5 project when he passed away. Now I'm working on that. We also have a '63 Nova SS. We have a new off-road park 7 miles away and lots of dirt roads around, so the Willys usually doesn't rest long, especially in the summer. I use the winch often, too. Just used it a couple of days ago to pull some logs. The winch makes the Jeep extra handy.
I also have to say this website keeps me interested. So many CJ2A things to do. I really want to do the CFCT, the Willys Reunion is fun, and I want to visit Moab and spend some time out west with it.
